PC gaming has come on leaps and bounds in recent times, largely down to the improvement in terms of the graphics and the overall offering developers are bringing us, but also due to the fact that game developers generally try and release their PC creations simultaneously with their console ones. The PC gaming genre is healthy as a result, that’s for sure.

PC gaming isn’t alone, though. Gaming, on the whole, is in a very good place, with the likes of mobile gaming growing massively, alongside a huge rise in casino games where the creations have not only improved but so too has the perfect blackjack offering players the chance to win bigger prizes and get better returns than ever before. Chuck in the huge popularity of consoles such as the PS4 and handheld devices like the Nintendo Switch and gaming has never been in such a good place.

PC gaming is what we’re focussing on here, though, with RPGs being the specific focus of this piece. Who doesn’t love having a humongous RPG adventure session? So, without further ado, here are four of the best ever RPGs we’ve seen on PC.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium isn’t like an all-action RPG such as Mass Effect 3 and creations like that; it’s more about playing a role, embracing your character, and trying to ride out the successes and failures that you encounter along the way. Playing as a detective, the idea of the game is to solve a murder that occurs in the retro city of Revachol. Alongside that, you have to help solve the various mysteries around your identity and what happened in the past. Unlike most RPGs, there is no combat. This is a game where your investigative skills really come to the fore. With clever writing, a number of variations to the plot depending on what character you pick, and an all-round entertaining play, Disco Elysium is a classic.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I mean, who didn’t enjoy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?! Easily one of the biggest PC games ever made The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an RPG with very little wrong with it. The setting of the game is beautiful – full of lovely sunsets and swaying trees, and the NPCs which populate the game and offer out various quests and the like are memorable. If monster-slaying and inter-dimensional raiders are your kinds of things, then you can’t really beat The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. What. A. Game.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

A role-playing video game developed and published by Larian Studios, this creation is full of adventure with its abundance of merchant kidnapping, teleportation spells, using blood to set fire to things, and combat to rival any game. All of that while you’re on a quest for godhood. The best thing about Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the fact that you can undertake the mayhem with up to four friends, where you can actually end up working against each other in the end too. A crazy but incredibly fun game, Divinity: The PC gaming community will always remember original Sin 2.

Pillars of Eternity

Funded off the back of a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pillars of Eternity was hugely popular at the time, especially with fans of games such as Baldur’s Gate. Not only was it similar to those types of creations, but it had its own qualities too. The writing is superb, the conflicts around social struggles and religious beliefs add another layer to it, as does the all-around enjoyable nature of the game. A simply great release.
