Remove Thumbs Down

So, since the topic of making the forum a less hostile environment has been pervasive today, I figured I'd suggest something here that would actually be a simple step to prevent some of it.

Down voting doesn't serve any purpose other than to annoy the person on the receiving end.

Unlike upvotes which save people the need to post things like "haha" or "good post" or "cool!", and make the person happy who receives them.

Down votes are usually used when you disagree with something someone posted. And when the downvote is issued, the person will want to know why, and a post will be needed to explain it, which defeats the purpose in the end.

I challenge anyone to show me a downvote that actually had a useful purpose. Sometimes people downvote and then reply anyway, which is just redundant. It only feels good for the person giving it to them, and it's a malicious way of feeling good.

Thoughts?

Dota 2 Weekly Patch - 24/05/13: Items, Couriers & China

This week’s Dota 2 update continues the recent trend of extremely light patches which focus more on gameplay fixes and cosmetic items as opposed to introducing new features or heroes. This particular patch features some minor fixes for Elder Titan, a series of improvements to the UI and a major reduction to the game’s memory usage, which should help to improve the game’s performance for users with less powerful computers. A series of cosmetic item sets have been introduced for Beastmaster, Chaos Knight, Clinkz, Leshrac, Lycanthrope, Phantom Assassin, Razor, Rubick and Weaver. Three brand new cosmetic couriers have also been added to the game including Maximilian the Beetlebear, Yonex’s Rage, and Shagbark, which has been a community favourite courier for some time after being designed and developed by CyborgMatt, Anuxi and several other famous personalities. Yonex’s Rage, an Invictus Gaming themed courier, and CyborgMatt’s own Shagbark are both available from the Dota 2 drop system while Maximilian is rewarded as a purchase incentive to owners of the "Raidcall Dota 2 League Season 3 Pass".
A series of unearthed UI files hint at the upcoming release of a "Guild" system, which appears to function similarly to the team organisation feature, only in a less serious manner. A massive selection of new models for upcoming second tutorial map were also discovered in the game files, which appeared alongside the addition of an updated world map showing a total of three separate tutorials, two of which are brand new but cannot currently be accessed. A series of "Low Violence" alternative censored assets were also introduced for use in the recently released Chinese client. Strict censorship laws in China prevent violent content such as blood and gore from being shown, forcing Valve to make a series of cosmetic modifications to a number of heroes including Ancient Apparition, Bane, Clinkz, Doom, Huskar, Lich, Lifestealer, Night Stalker, Pudge, Pugna, Shadow Demon, Shadow Fiend, Skeleton King, Undying and Visage. A number of item and ability icons were also modified to remove violent content in order for the game to conform to the previously mentioned censorship laws, including changes for Queen of Pain, Warlock and the Morbid Mask. Fear not, however, as this 'Low Violence' feature will only affect the Chinese version of Dota 2. CyborgMatt has uploaded images of every affected hero and icon in his update analysis should you want to take a curious look at restrained Lifestealer, Robo-King, Shadow Crow or masked Doom.
Finally got access to my Hl2.net account again

Been a few years. I had lost the password and forgot which email account it was associated with. I'd like to apologize to everyone I harassed/argued with during my religious "awakening" of 2005-2008. I was disappointed with my post count when I logged in, sub 2000 posts despite this account being so old. Oh well. Can see that not much has changed here. Here's hoping for a HL3 announcement soon!

Off the wagon...

I don't really post here anymore, but I thought this would be a good place to come out and thought dump about this topic, seeing as how I made a thread about it the last time it was a prevalent theme in my life.

So, after probably something like 3 years of having kicked a pack a day smoking habit, I was a huge pussy and relapsed. I remember making a self-congratulatory (i.e. masturbatory) thread about it when I had finally managed to quit, but oddly enough, quitting at the time was incredibly easy. I was just fed up with smoking, and really hated the act of it so much, that after getting too sick to consistently chain smoke, I gave it up. Ironically though, I can't seem to get over how much I enjoy it now.

What's really pathetic, is how much I try to come up with excuses for this shit. "Oh ****, i'm just going through some shit", or "I was in a weird spot and caved", are the typical quips I spew when people ask why the hell I went back to it. But, from a purely logical standpoint, I had been (idiotically) smoking spliffs with my friends, which progressed to smoking spliffs on my own, which progressed to taking drags from friends, which spiraled into bumming them from friends and strangers, at which point I thought to myself "Well, I guess I gotta support my own habit with my own money". A part of me really believes though, that it was some sort of pathetic cry for attention.

I bought a bag of Top from a gas station a little less than a week ago. ****... I bought it last Friday, and I doubt it'll even last me to tomorrow. The trip was out of the way too; I went with the explicit goal of buying either a pack or some rolling tobacco, and I trembled like an eager meth-addict the whole way There. I came out to my mom about it afterwards, since she smoked for a decent chunk of time too. I told her, and everybody else, that i'd quit again after this bag. But what really sucks is that I think i'm just ****ing lying to myself when I tell that to other people.

I smoked my first cigarette of today with a cup of coffee, and it was great. I loved it so much that I thought to myself, "Damn, I dunno if I can just drop it like that after today...". I came up with more excuses: "Oh, I just gotta fix my mindset, and then i'll be ready to quit", or "yeah, once i'm feeling better emotionally, then i'll quit".

I think i'm going to go pour another cup of coffee once i'm done with this post. Another cigarette would go great with that, but I just may have to turn it down, in an effort to stretch this bag as far as possible. That'd be 3 cigarettes in 3 hours too. A boge and some coffee sounds so good right now though...

TL;DR : Sinko is a huge crybaby who started smoking again

Seriously? What an awful name! I understand that the idea is that it's supposed to be a complete entertainment center, hence the concept of "oneness", but it's going to cause some confusion. Whenever I am talking about the original Playstation I can say the "PS1" or "playstation one" and people will know what I talking about. I'm already experiencing some cognitive dissonance - I see "Xbox One" and I think of this:

Music: Rate and Discuss

We are rejuvenating the “Rate and Discuss” threads, with the intent of generating discussion and debate, in regard to your recent watch, playthrough, or read. For the music forum, this could be the last gig you attended or the latest albums you have been listening to. As a prerequisite of posting in this thread, you must expand upon your rating with, at the very least, a brief paragraph as to why you delegated it said rating. You must discuss, analyse, and critique – “I liked it” is not sufficient, and any posts that do not meet this criteria will be deleted.

There can, of course, be discussion and argument - but in the same way that "I liked it" does not constitute a post, neither does - and it pains me to say this - "You're stupid, shut up" though some of you clearly are.

An example of a suitable post:

kupocake
Pinocchio - 4/5
With the Disney movies, it takes me a while to work out whether I've seen them before in my childhood. I'm still none the wiser here, since I'm pretty sure I would have repressed memories of seeing this if I was a child... but then, as an adult there's a whole extra dimension of sinister to it. Some of it's probably not intentional (why does Gepetto want a real boy in his house anyway, huh?) but some of it must be (the coachman who takes young boys to pleasure island, and they 'don't come back as boys'?!), and it's just generally as far from a stereotype of Disney as simple, tedious good versus evil as you're likely to find.
Anyone who has problem with this, I suggest you pm me; your post will only be deleted here.

Half Life 3 Ideas

We all basically know Half Life 3 is like the second coming, it could happen tomorrow or in a million years, so with that in mind I'm just curious what would valve fans like to see in the game? I personally would like to see.

-The Borealis (basically the whole Sea-Station confrontation they've been planning since Half Life 2 but that got cut, this would also include whatever the Tech Eli was worried about, be it a Portal Gun or something else.

-New Weapons(pretty self explanatory)

-More Gravity Gun Interaction( I know the gravity gun is already highly advanced but it'd be cool to see it branch out farther beyond what it can already do, maybe to cross a chasm you have to sprint and jump and use the gravity gun to swing on a loose piece of metal across, think of all the possibilities!

-Down The Sights Aiming For All Guns(this isn't that important but its pretty much the only area HL feels a bit outdated compared to most modern shooters)

Vehicles That Are Actually Fun To Drive(maybe a setpiece where you get control of a gunship?)

So thats just what I've thought of now, what do you want to see?

CS:GO "Overwatch" Introduces Community Driven Policing

Valve have begun a trial run of a new community initiative for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive named Overwatch. The idea is to recruit a group of "investigators" from the community in order to combat persistent cheating and other disruptive, in-game behaviour. Players are selected to become investigators based on a variety of criteria, including their win ratio in competitive games, the age of their steam account, the number of hours they have played, and their own record of behaviour.

Once chosen, community investigators will receive cases via a new "Overwatch" option on their menu screen. Each new case will consist of around 10 minutes of recorded footage featuring the suspected player in action, after which they will be asked to make a decision as to their accountability. If enough investigators agree that the accused player is guilty of an offence, then a suitable banning will be issued. Over time, each individual investigator will receive a score based on the number of cases they have judged, as well as the frequency that other Overwatch Investigators agree.

For now, the system is undergoing a limited beta test in order to ensure the fairness of the system and reveal any major problems with its conception. A full FAQ for the Overwatch initiative can be found here.

Petition for an ultra-lightweight alternate Steam client

I would like a version of Steam that I could load, when I wanted to, as an alternate to the main Steam client (on PC/Mac/Linux). This version would support game launching and possibly game maintenance, only.

Since the only thing we "own" via Steam are licenses to execute the games we have purchased, it would be nice to be able to get to that functionality without a lot of other encumbrance, when we so desire.
For times one wants the full Steam experience, just load that client, instead.

Huge Tornado wrecks up the place near Oklahoma City

Basically, the majority of a Oklahoma City suburb has been obliterated. Multiple schools were hit right as kids were getting out, with the town only having about an 18 minute warning before it hit them. They're still trying to dig out people house by house, and are still trying to find more kids at one of the schools that was hit. The debris at the school is about 10ft deep, and they said one section where a teacher brought a bunch of kids to take shelter simply doesn't exist anymore, the walls to the room are just gone. Doesn't sound good...

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...ugh-neighborhoods-south-of-oklahoma-city?lite

A monster tornado packing winds as strong as 200 mph roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, pulverizing block after block of homes and demolishing the walls of an elementary school. At least 10 people were killed, the Oklahoma City medical examiner said.
Crews frantically searched an estimated 30 square miles of wreckage and were only beginning to get a sense of the destruction. Dazed people stepped around mangled cars and picked through acres of splintered wood and metal where houses had stood. Hospitals reported several dozen injured.
“The whole city looks like a debris field,” said Mayor Glenn Lewis of the city of Moore, which appeared to be hardest hit.
At Plaza Towers Elementary School, the tornado tore the roof off, and authorities kept hysterical parents back because it was too loud to hear screams for help. It was not clear how many children were inside. A teacher told NBC affiliate KFOR that she draped herself on top of six children in a bathroom to shelter them.
More than two hours after the tornado struck, several children were pulled out alive.

No more "USER" folder.

Hadn't played HL2-DM for several months. Logged on and received a hugh Steam update 97,000kb.
Game no longer worked. Would show Valve splash screen/sound, then Powered By splash screen and then right back to desk top. Played with it for days. Deleted and reinstalled game. Deleted game & steam - reinstalled. No joy. Finally did a complete disk wipe, reinstalled Windows, Steam and game.
Well, game now works -yea. However, no modified Weapon Sights, History, Favorites etc. Also notice that in the Steam/HL2 folder tree there is no longer a Folder named after the user. IE: ja3780 where I assume all my personal stuff would be. Sorry for the long preamble. Now, 2 questions. Since I still have the full original Steam folder tree on an external drive.
1. Can I put back my original stuff and where would I put in.
2. Should there be a USERNAME folder.

Many thanks all

This week's Dota 2 update shipped a little later than usual in order to avoid complications with the ongoing International 3 Western Qualifier. The update includes a series of gameplay tweaks relating to Elder Titan and Ursa, while a few modifications related to memory management were made to help improve the game's performance. Lobby and tournament games now support up to 6 broadcast channels, which has been increased from the previous limit of 4, allowing even more commentators and language options to be available by spectators viewing online matches or replays. A new cosmetic item set was released for Queen of Pain as a reward for purchasers of the recently released "Premier League Season 5" ticket. This item set is unique however, as the appearance of the "Wicked Succubus Set" can be upgraded and improved based on the amount of tournament matches the owner has viewed. The three different levels and their cosmetic differences are shown in the below image.
These HUDs were included alongside a wide series of unreleased alternate HUDs, including the "International 2013 HUD" promised to all Compendium owners after the newly added Stretch Goal 3 was completed earlier this week. Additionally, a new announcer pack was also added to the game files, this time themed after the extremely popular community personality "Pyrion Flax", which has apparently been sitting in the Steam Workshop for many months. The announcer pack also features an accompanying 'Mega Kill' version for all you triple killers out there interested in hearing Pyrion Flax scream at you through your speakers in celebration.
next 3 sonic games will be WiiU exclusive....

"facepalm" of all the consoles to go exclusive with they choose the one that's doing the worst in this generation, especially at the launch of the next generation where they can make a name for themselves on the next XBOX or PS4 and really get a larger number of fans.

so far the games we know are

-mario and sonic winter Olympics
-sonic lost world(which from what we can gather looks like a full sonic game)
-and a third unannounced game, possibly a follow up to sonic and all stars racing transformed

Well, it's incredible. I didn't ever doubt that, but the formula seems perfected. The atmosphere is unrivaled and beautiful. Ken Levine delivers again, huzzah! I'm a fan of Booker DeWitt and the idea of a talking protagonist. Also lots of race/class issues at hand that most vidja are too scared to tackle.

A lot to talk about here. Didn't see a thread proper. Ample use of spoiler tags duders.

Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson Reveal They Left Valve to Create Augmented Reality Technology

Back in February we posted about a large number of staff departures from Valve that started off when Jeri Ellsworth tweeted about her leaving the company. The Verge have revealed Jeri's reason for leaving Valve: She and fellow ex-Valve employee Rick Johnson left to found their own company called Technical Illusions which aims to create augmented reality technology.

There was internal debate in Valve about whether to pursue augmented reality or virtual reality and the virtual reality supporters won out in the end. Jeri and Rick wanted to stay on the augmented reality project and so they left to create their own company. There are no hard feelings though and Gabe Newell had the Valve lawyers sign off all rights to Valve's augmented reality projects to the new company. Jeri said "I talked to Gabe, and he talked to the lawyers, and he's like, 'It's theirs, make it happen.'"

The technology itself is being called CastAR and it is quite different to the Google Glasses method of
View attachment 24177
Prototype CastAR glasses
augmented reality. A miniature projector is mounted on a pair of glasses which bounces an image off special retroreflecting panels. The panel also has infrared LEDs that a camera on the glasses can detect which the system uses to determine the user's position so that it can project the correct image as if the the user was moving in 3D space. An interesting aspect of the device is that multiple users can use the same screen to see different images as the light from each pair of glasses is reflected back at them.

More information, and a video showing CastAR in action, can be seen at the Verge.

The Adventures of Hercule Cubbage: Chapters 1 & 2

Hello there! I'm Mythos, a fellow Half-Life fan and occasional comic creator. My latest work is The Adventures of Hercule Cubbage, a series that Marc Laidlaw himself has approved. I decided to join the ValveTime forum and share my comic series with you guys, I hope you'll like it. Right now, there are two chapters available online, with more to come in the near future.

While there might be some surprises in the story, I'm sticking pretty close to the canon (with the obvious exception of the main character). So, as far as "fan-fiction" goes, I'm playing it pretty straight, but I'll let you be the judge of that. Enjoy!

Steam Trading Cards Officially Revealed

Following a week of speculation and rumour, Valve have officially announced the beta of Steam Trading Cards, a new feature that will allow players to earn and trade rewards using their games and Community Profile. Also included is a major cosmetic update for the Steam Community, offering players better ways to personalise the look and layout of their profile pages.

Players will be able to obtain the new Trading Cards in two ways. Firstly, by playing any of the participating games on Steam and secondly, by trading with other players in the Steam Community. Currently, the beta allows users to obtain cards using any of the games listed below, with more titles to follow in the coming months:

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Don't Starve

Team Fortress 2

Portal 2

Dota 2

Half-Life 2

Once you have amassed a completed collection of cards, they can be combined to craft a badge specific to that game. These badges will be displayed on your profile page, including one "featured" badge displayed at the top of the page. Badges now also posses an XP value that contributes towards your profile level. Each new level offers certain perks, including increased friends list capacity and Profile Showcases, a new feature that allows you to highlight your favourite games, workshop items, or achievements on your profile page.

Crafting badges will also unlock their own randomised rewards, including coupons for the steam store which offer discounts on Games and DLC; new emoticons for use in your steam chats; and background art for your newly customisable profile page. All of these crafting rewards are tradable. However, they can only be used while you own them.

Profile pages in general have also seen a major update, with a greater emphasis on your personal playing habits and style. Along with customisable background art, information such as achievements, statistics, and community contributions have been organised into blocks which can be highlighted via the new Profile Showcase feature mentioned above.

Invites to the new beta are being released periodically, so be sure to sign up here if you wish to get early access to all the new features.

Nintendo claiming ad revenue from Youtube videos (Let's Plays, etc.)

http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/16/4336114/nintendo-claims-ad-revenue-on-user-generated-youtube-videos

Basically Nintendo partnered with Youtube and now videos with a certain amount/length of content matched to Nintendo's samples that they've provided to Youtube have had ads put on them with the money going to Nintendo or if the uploader was already monetizing them the money is now going to Nintendo instead of them.

To be honest I'm surprised it's taken this long for a major company to do something like this. Let's Plays are pretty blatant copyright infringement (whether it has any positive or negative effect on sales or anything else) and large companies tend to be fairly conservative about that sort of thing and edge on the side of caution.

Films: Rate and Discuss

Some of it's probably not intentional (why does Gepetto want a real boy in his house anyway, huh?) but some of it must be (the coachman who takes young boys to pleasure island, and they 'don't come back as boys'?!), and it's just generally as far from a stereotype of Disney as simple, tedious good versus evil as you're likely to find.

http://bostonmarathonconspiracy.com/

because you know it'll happen, which it already has. the clown prince of conspiracy stupid:

Alex Jones, who has become the country’s preeminent conspiracy theorist, wasted no time. As with 9/11, Sandy Hook and other national tragedies, he sees the Boston explosions as a “false flag” attack committed by the government. The objective this time: Expanding the Transportation Security Administration’s reach to sporting events
stfu you idiot

Looking for a 120hz monitor

I like the look of the Samsung SyncMaster S27A950D, but I wonder if there's another out there that would give me more bang for my buck. My only requirements are

- limited to no ghosting
- minimal output delay (apparently most LCD monitors are in the 8-16ms range here?)
- 1080p or 1200p
- non-shit colour and contrast

How the monitor physically looks is not relevant in the slightest, I just want one with fast response and reasonable colour reproduction. Any help is hugely appreciated.

this is probably a good enough reason why the US/UK shouldnt arm Syrian rebels

A graphic video has emerged of a Syrian rebel commander cutting the heart out of a government soldier’s chest and biting into it.

Described by Human Rights Watch as “emblematic” of a civil war that has rapidly descended into sectarian hatred and revenge killings, the amateur footage was posted on the internet yesterday - sparking outrage among opposition figures, as well as supporters of President Bashar al-Assad.
Human Rights Watch said the video shows Abu Sakkar – the prominent founder of rebel group Farouq Brigade, which originated in Homs.

In the clip, Sakkar cuts into the chest of the dead soldier before ripping out his heart and liver and declaring: “I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog”. To off-screen cheers and chants of “Allahu akbar [God is Great]”, the man then bites into the heart.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...ent-soldiers-heart-and-eating-it-8615112.html
