I have taken it upon myself to compile a bestiary of all the people, aliens machines and monsters encountered in the Half Life series, so far, the site is in version 1 and is oonly a alphabetical list with 'faction' icons.

http://www.freewebs.com/halflifebestiary

I plan to make a short Bio for each entry.

Things i need-

Any creatures i may have left out, this includes creatures which were cut from the games, unused models and creatures that only appeared in conceptual art.
Information about the various creatures and people.
Notification of any errors or things i have left out.
Your storyline theories that relate to any of the entries.
Model Viewer pictures (black background) of each creature from HL2

Those who submit information will be credited, please help me make this website great!

Thank You

*Thinks*
Well, with the Xenians, there's no proven relationship to them with the Combine, so I'd avoid putting a Combine symbol by them.

Nice - you've included some of the obscure ones, like the Snap-bug.

You've missed out the Panthereye/Diablo. It's a form of Xenian fauna.

You've missed out on the Charger, a really obscure Xenian fauna that was included in the original SDK, but nobody bothered compiling, thus nobody knows what looks like. I can provide a picture, if you want.

Oh, and you've got an entry called 'Alien Fauna'. All the Xenians not affiliated with their military are fauna. If you mean the Xen tree, it's flora, not fauna.

Thank You

I think there was one, that the Nihilanth was the 'administrator of Xen' and so he is affliated with the Combine which is why the Vortigaunts were being controlled to kill Gordon who posed a threat to the Combine already as noticed by Breen.

Yes, i forgot about the PantherEye, if you could provide a picture of both it and the charger, do, please. I'll put you as a contributor in it's Bio and in the Alien flora (Gotta, correct that, me dumb so is are sometimes)

I may have included the charger, but renamed it because some of the model names juts don't cut it.

Contributers:

Angry Lawyer : Panthereye, Xen Flora

Oh Yeah

By the way, i also need all the mdl. files from opposing force so i can rip their pics with the model viewer (my copy doesn't work.)

Can someone send me those please? I'll add you to contributors for each OF exclusive model.

The Nihilanth was the ruler of Xen, but was never named as an administrator, and apart from a few obscure comments from the vortigaunts, there is no defining evidence that he was ruled by the Combine. Add it as 'It is theorised that the Nihilanth served the Combine' rather than a definate.

Here's the images you need. I can't supply you with models, due to space limitations, though. And you might want to make your website a little easier to read.

Thanks for the pics, i'm not sure how to go about making the website easier to read, i suck at web design.

Would it be possible for you to send the files over an IM program, do you have MSN Messenger?

You can also contact me at [email protected]

My only IM program is MSN Messanger, and that seems to act buggy because the person who built my machine set up some odd firewalling that causes MSN's file transfer to blow up.

Besides, the file's are pretty big.

On the other hand, name what sort of poses/backgrounds you need,, and I'll try to get some shots of them.
'Try' being the definitive word there.

Hmmm...

Ok, i'd only like a black background, that'd be fine.
Make the screens in a profile shot or a characteristic pose as long as you show the whole model.

Thanks.

Hey, mind if I make a few minor corrections/suggestions?

Corrections
-It's Race-X, not X-Race.
-It's Gonome, not Genome.
-Lazlo is spelled Laszlo.
-Otis' last name is Laurey, not Calhoun.
-Odessa Cubbage is a Colonel, not a Lieutenant.
-The technical name of the Antlion Guard is Myrmidont Giganticus.
-The Combine Helicopter is known as a Hunter Chopper.
-There are two types of scanners, the City Scanner, and the Shield Scanner, yet you just listed "Sanner".
-There are two types of military tanks (the Bradley's Tank and the Abrams Tank) yet you just listed "Tank".
-There are two types of Combine Soldiers. There's the standard soldier, and there's the Nova Prospekt Prison Guard (which you haven't included).
-You forgot Dr. Simmons (from Blue Shift).
-You haven't included the Geneworm (Race-X leader).
-You haven't included Dr. Keller's first name - it's Richard btw.
-You've included Laszlo, yet you forgot about Sandy (the guy that was helping him).
-If you want to be real specific, then there's a few other characters in HL2 that you've forgotten, like Leon, Noriko and Winston from Shorepoint base...
-You've included Combine and Military vehicles, so you should also include Resistance Vehicles (Airboat, Scout Car[Buggy]).
-You haven't included the Marine Corps Recruits (seen in Boot Camp).
-You haven't included the Military Police Grunts (seen during Boot Camp).

Suggestions
-You could make your site look a little more professional. Here are some examples of professional looking sites:

Questions
-Do you plan to include locations in your guide? Eg, City 17, BMRF, Nova Prospekt, Lighthouse Point etc?
-Do you plan to include weapons in your guide? Eg, Crowbar, Pulse Rifle, Gluon Gun etc?

And finally, good luck with you project!

I do, but i plan on getting all the creatures down first, then i'll start on everything else.

-Do you plan to include weapons in your guide? Eg, Crowbar, Pulse Rifle, Gluon Gun etc?

Yes, as well.

And finally, good luck with you project![/QUOTE]

Thanks, very helpful information, do you know any more names of more anonymous characters? Such as Rosenberg's first name, or more sergeant, colnel etc. I'll replay Half Life and get the locker names, can someone get me the bedbox names from the beggining of Op For.?

This is really coming together well, thanks guys!

Glad to see my help's appreciated. Now, with the Anomalous Materials Lab locker and the Opposing Force footlocker names, they're just the names of the developers, (eg. Newell, Laidlaw). I don't think you can really count them as actual game characters.

The name of Shephard's squad Drill Instructor is: "Senior Drill Instructor Dwight T. Barns" There's also another Drill Instructor named "Drill Instructor Sharp". In the opening sequence of Opposing Force, the black soldier is named Private Tower, and the Engineer is Private Jackson. Dr. Rosenberg's first name isn't known.

Oh yeah, and someting else to add to your list. You've forgotten the "Razor Trains". They're the big, black, scary looking trains that the Combine use to transport humans/stalkers around.

I might be able to help you with your website design (e.g. making images, buttons, etc). I can't do HTML though. :( I've attached an example of what I think looks alright. Nothing too much. Just something I've cooked up in a few minutes:

Neat

Nice design, i'd be a good idea to split it into letter groups, i'll sort of Half Life it up a bit (orange and grey.)

Is anyone else willing to come forward with their Half Life knowledge?

New Opening- Model shots of all half life 2 models in hammer, including the cremators, exosuits, synths and other cut creatures who can be spawned.

Hammer isn't the best for photography. I'd rather use the HL2 Model Viewer. Certain monsters never got past the concept art stage (eg. Cremators, Alien Combine, Antlion King) and have no in-game model (therefore no pic, unless you scan Raising the Bar, which is copyrighted).

Getting the HL1/OP4 models would be easy. One could just unpack them from the .gfc and use the old HLMV. Af for the Blue Shift and Decay models, they might be tricky. Especially Decay, since it only exists on the PS2 right now.

And finally, more things to add to the list: Black Op Apache, Black Op Osprey... that's all I can think of right now.

Oh, PS, do you plan to have information about each of the things in your bestary or will it just be a list?

Jimineh Criket!

Theres a HL2 model viewer? I thought Hammer was the model viewer, ah well,i'll download it then.

The Cremators have models, many have discussed spawning them, they apparently shoot lasers out their chest eye and fire dissolving acid, frekki!

I'm fine for the HL1 models, i just need Op. For, Blue Shift and Decay ones. I'll add the black ops Helis.

Each entry will have information and picture/s but i would rather compile a complete as can be list first.

Edit- Ok i split the groups into letters, added Black Ops. Helis, web design coming soon.

They're Stalkers. When you spawn them, they will attack you with a laser from their foot (WTF?), and if you kill them, it crashes the game. :/
i just need Op. For, Blue Shift and Decay ones.
The Op4 ones can be extracted - but how on earth will you get the Blue Shift and Decay ones? I mean, the Blue Shift ones are technically possible - someone with Blue Shift installed could simply browse/extract them... but the Decay ones? Someone would have to extract the PS2 content to the computer IF it's possible.

When taking pictures, I think you should use the best-looking models - so that's the HL2 ones, or the Blue Shift HD pack ones. It just looks better if you have pictures of nice, high-poly models - rather than some squary low-poly things.

Do you mean the prowlers? I have a cremator model pic anyway.

I need the Blue Shift, Op For ones, as for Decay, i was wondering if someone who has the game could take a screenshot of the chars then i could rip it out onto a black background.

I plan on using both, sorta comparison style and because the majority of models are from HL1 and it's ilk.

Prowlers don't have an in-game model. They're definitely stalkers. You can try it yourself (npc_create npc_stalker). It might be possible that you have a cremator in-game model - if someone made one. It would be nice if someone made all the concept art creatures into game models. :p

Heh, that's not a bad idea.

And your site looks more organized now that you've put the beasts into alphabetical groups. Maybe you should make the text a little smaller - it kind of dominates the page and can be a little confusing to read. I also think the keys would look nicer in a table, as in, you have a column with the symbols, then the description next to it.

This is starting to look good. :D Just make the menu frame a bit wider. I think it looks more organized if you have the names on one line only, rather than spanning two/three lines... but don't make it too wide so that it takes up something like a quarter of the page. :p

On your page, the - Animal- Subject is a non sentient creature originating from Earth. is in black. You should fix that so that it is in orange. I also thought that if you used a ">" instead of a "-" for indicating a transition would make it look more visual.

Oh, I'll write a few summaries for some of my favourite creatures, if you want. Like the Kingpin, Mr. Friendly (what you put down as a tentacle lasher, or something), the Charger, and stuff like that.

Which, the frist one or the updated one, i made it better now, updated the key, made the text smaller.

Oh and to Angry Lawyer and anyone with monster descriptions, send them to: [email protected] in doc. rtf. or txt. format and i'll gather it together before uploading everything.

I'm afraid he's right. Now that you've made the text much smaller, it looks very unorganized. Why are there huge gaps between the names?

Example:

Administrator

Breen, Wallace

It should be:

Administrator
Breen, Wallace

I think you should also get rid of the technical names from the list - save them for the actual guide. The idea for me would be to have as little text as you can in the list. I would also get rid of the titles, and save them for the actual guide.

Example:
Freeman, Gordon

rather than:
Doctor Freeman, Gordon

You should shift the text size one or two sizes up. I'm just thinking whether you should get rid of the key as well, and leave it for the guide. Leave it on for the time being. We'll see how it turns out in relation to the site being nice to look at.

Ok

Right, i shifted the text up a few sizes, got rid of the gaps, made the layout better, and added some flashy gradient boxes to the main page as well as adding a few more creatures and fixing some typos.

How now?

Stick the address to it in your signature, so more people are exposed to it.
Right now, as my Mod just blew up due to an update, and the fact I have to re-implement alot of stuff that I did, I'm writing a few descriptions for your site. Damn SDK.

Now we're getting somewhere. :D Maybe you should separate the alphabetical groups a bit more (add another enter in-between them maybe?) It looks like one big column right now.

I've just noticed something - in the list you have a thing called a "Black Mesa Battle Mech". What is it? I haven't played HL1 in quite some time.

FAQ Time!

FAQ Time!

1. Black Mesa Engineer

The guys in construction helmets you see at the beggining of Half Life.

2. Black Mesa HEV Combat Bot

The HL:DM HEV robot model

3. Cadilac

The car you escape in with Dr. Rosenberg at the end of Blue Shift.

4. Combine Digging Vehicle

A Combine Vehicle included in the Beta but it never made it because the level it was in got cut.

5. Frank

Gamefaqs Users' pet name for Dog's Ball

6. Gonarch Pod

A pod which a Gonarch is in, was in the HL2 Beta, then got cut.

7. Gun Emplacement, Resistance

Don't the Resistance have gun emplacements in HL? I think they did, can anyone prove me right or wrong?

8. Headcrab, Tame

Referrs to domesticated headcrabs , e.g Hedy Lamarr

9. Xenian Roach

Remember the tiny bugs in the ventilition shafts in Half Life you enjoyed stepping on so much?

1. His name is actually "Gus" (says so on his uniform tag). There's many "Gusses", just like there were many "Otises" and "Barneys".
2. Oh, right, now I remember. :p Are you sure it's BMRF though? I thought it was a grunt thing, because I remember reading somewhere that in the German version of HL1, all the human grunt models were replaced with the combat bots, for violence reasons.
3. I thought that was the BMRF SUV?
4. Beta, right.
5. Right.
6. Interesting. :)
7. The resistance didn't have gun emplacements. As far as I know, there's only two types of emplacements in HL2, and they're both Combine. There's the AR1 (which looks like a pulse rifle) and there's the plasma rifle (it's the same weapon that the hunter chopper and the airboat use, only this is an emplacement version of it). You only use this once in the game though, in Water Hazard when you open the second set of gates.
8. Dr. Kleiner says it himself: "There is only one Hedy!". I don't think there are very many domestic headcrabs. Hedy is probably the only one.
9. They're normal roaches, not Xenian. ;)

9. Were ordinary cockroaches. Notice how you never saw them in Xen.

The HEV thing wasn't a Robot. Just a guy in a suit, like Gordon.

You've missed off the loader, I think, the big yellow robot in the original Half-Life game, right during the train journey.

There was no HL2 Beta, only leaked content. Don't have the Gonarch Pod as a seperate creature, as it should be included under the Gonarch itself.

Oh, and there was a green combat robot thing, but it was military controlled. You can fight them in Sven Coop, and pick them as character models in DM.

He described it as a "robot" model for deathmatch. He could be referring to the robo (the same ones you fight in Sven Coop). There was a model like that for HL1: DM if you remember.

AS I said in the last post, they were Military units. As far as I know, in the German version of the game, all marines were replaced with them to make the game less violent.

HEV Combat Bot

By HEV Combat Bot, i meant the one on the left, think you think i mean the one on the right, which is down as 'Black Mesa HEV Scientist.'

I didn't miss the loader, it's down as 'Black Mesa Loader Bot'.

Ok, i named construction worker, Gus, added an alphabetised letter jump (clikc on the mini logo to return to the key), turned Xenian Roach into normal roach, renamed Cadillac 'BMRF SUV' and i removed 'Gun Emplacement, Resistance.'

Oh and Angry_Lawyer, got any pics of those Military Bots?

If you look at the original model file, which was provided with HL1's SDK, the 'HEV Robot' was covered in millitary designs, like camoflage. The only reason they made it look like a HEV in multiplayer was to allow people to choose their own colours.
