HL2 Retail/Steam Packages Confirmed!

So basically, those of us who want a hardcopy get a cock in the eye?

If one could ask Valve to mail hardcopies (not branded with a CDKey of course, making them useless to anyone without one from Steam or a previous hardcopy purchase) of any of their products bought on Steam, then I'd be interested.

What about those of us who like being able to pull out the CDs/DVD after formatting or building a new computer and installing the game in 4-5 minutes instead of spending 3+ hours downloading crap? This is of course if you have unmetered broadband, I don't even want to think about how screwed 56k'ers and those poor bastards who live in Australia that get charged per MB.

I'll be happy to get HL2 either way, but considering I want a hardcopy of HL2, AND access to DOD:Source/HL:Source, this is weak.

You can burn the files that you download of Steam onto a DVD or multiple CD's so that you can use them to install after a reformat.

If your on dial-up well you wouldn't have been able to really enjoy playing DoD:S or CS:S so whats the point in getting anything with all of this extra stuff, just HL2 is all they will be able to use really.

i think you misunderstood. the reply to the email said it is completely legal to burn your cache files to media. and even, infact copy a friends game disk if you have a steam key.

I'll be getting the CE, then using the key to unlock my preload.

so I get the T-shirt and no 6 CD install...

Life goes on hold when HL2 ships.

Ahem? Excuse me? Britain is like that. Yes. The whole UK. I have not found a single online retailer who has the CE up for online buying. Coupled with the fact that the nearest "Game" Shop is like 1 hour away, it's a tad annoying.

So it's not bullSh*t, he could be telling the truth, so before you go accusing people, think logically. Use your brain, not your arse.

I'm on the fence whether the CE is good enough for me. I haven't preloaded HL2 yet, and suddenly Gold seems like a nicer option (Yes, they should mail us a CE box too, so we can say we bought the CE)... I have no idea. Also, can someone tell me if, when you DL something off steam, you can put it on a CD for backup? the answer to that could sway me.
LOL, Up until now the only companies who have announced the CE are www.Gamestop.com and www.ebgames.com (not even the mighty www.amazon.com has it listed) see here:-

http://pc.ign.com/articles/550/550702p1.html?fromint=1

Why can they do that? Because they are the biggest players in the american retail market and they need to be courted by publishers, everyone else comes second. Vivendi haven't even made an offical statement yet to confirm what is in going to be shipped, and the vast majority of retailers wait to hear what the publisher has to say before doing anything (promising something you can't deliver leads to legalities). Gabes announcement is more interesting with respect to the steam options than the Vivendi options (no doubt agreed..but still to be confirmed).

In fact, VUg international and UK don't even have mentions of HL² yet on their sites (and you can buy direct from them) and until such time as they, the publishers do it isn't the least bit surprising that no online retailers anywhere are going to list up the CE details. Hell, you can't even get the details of the Standard at present.

When the Raising the Bar/behind the game book was announced by Prima it wasn't listed at amazon.co.uk for a good couple of days . Still fussed and worried then call Vivendi universal on 0118 920 9100 during the day and button them down with respect to the CE availability in the UK.

As for that cockpuppet I was flaming, he truly is a worthless serial whiner of the first order, and has been ever since he first came to this forum. If he woke up and not only found out that he had won the lottery, but also had the Olsen twins prepped and ready to give him a live show he would still find room for complain. The jar is always empty in his life. :dozey:

Dumbest statement ever.
And your statement...

HL2 must be pretty big then if it has 6 discs. Taking into account that CS:S is probably only 1 maybe 2 discs thats still like 4-5 discs for HL2. I would have thought thats pretty big and its seems that it doesnt have MP as well so thats 4-5 discs of pure HL2.

Whats the bit about steam purchasers getting CS:S mean. I think that you must be able to kind of pre order your HL2 package next week then and if you have you can play the terrible CS:S for a laugh. Although if it ment that you could buy CS:S next week i would laugh very hard at anyone that did it considering they would have bought CS:S and then bought HL2 and CS:S after that. assuming they want HL2 although you would have to be pretty weird to just want CS:S.

good god, they really made the steam option just as viable if not more than getting the boxed CE. The physical goodies you get more than compensate for having cds and boxes methinks.

The soundtrack and posters caught my eye the most. ooo.
I never use stickers, and I don't wear hats, or postcards. but for the same price, that beats a "sampler" of the making of book.

their server is getting hammered with hits, like the Steam Powered forums were when CS:S beta was about to be released. You could only get in if you were willing to refresh 10 times each valid page load.

What kills me is there will be NO TFC:S in the forseeable future... and that irritates me beyond belief. SP is fine after the first run through, but MP is what drives me with games, one reason why the first Half life has been on my HD for 5 years now. as far as CS stands, it wont interest me enough into buying the game just yet, and i may just wait until i find official confirmation on tfc, IF they have TFC:S.

Simply i have learned my lesson with DOOM 3, great game, but after the first time, bleh. DOOM3 MP is not up to standard, so there it will sit on my shelf...

Im also not too fond of how the steam packages look alot better with content. ( gold i mean) I will always prefer hard copies and not stuff i download online. Makes me feel more secure about what i actually bought.

SO my open challenge to VALVE is simply this:

Let me buy the same packages in store VALVE, because as a consumer I prefer CHOICE over being forced into selecting via STEAM.

As a 36 year old fulltime employed man with 2 incomes, and with no children, I do have alot of liquid assets that I can choose how to spend. Its up to you if you are worthy enough to warrent my attention, but there are always other games, and im sure they wouldnt mind a piece of my paycheck.

TFC:Source is being ported along with all official Half-Life mods.

We should start hearing about TF2 soon as well :D

Prima book sampler...
May not even be the Strategy Guide at all! (and definitely not the coveted behind-the-scenes book)
Just speculation on my part until better info comes along.

But a free mod, an HL1 port, and a T-shirt won't be worth much of a $$ increase, let along a "sampler".

As for STEAM packages...if it comes in a box, I'll get it. I like boxes.

well as far as i have seen in what BattleField2 is going to be, Valve will be hard pressed to stay competetive if TF2 is still simular to what they had shown previously. Granted, im sure there is a new engine.

and if TFC:S is coming out, why not mention it, like they did with DOD:S? even the dislcaimer * when the product is finished as in the DoD case would have mollified me somewhat.

They have stated in the past that TFC:S will be ported over, we just won't have it until much later than DoD:S probably so there isn't much point in them revealing it yet.

The way I see it, the fact that CS:Source is coming out next week is just one way that Valve will twist Vivendi's arm not to sit on half-life 2. Even though many on this forum don't think so, millions will buy HL2 just to get CS:Sourse, as CS remains probably one of the most popular multi-player games. They won't want to risk millions of people buying the Steam version of HL2 just to get a CS Source, as that would likely drastically reduce their retail sales. Go Valve!

To get online you will have to use Steam anyway, the only difference between buying through steam and buying through a store is the format that the data comes on.

From a store its on CD's, from Steam its comes through the internet and then you can put it onto a DVD or CD. Nothing else is different which means that all those bad things you listed (although not likely to happen) can still occur even if you bought it through the store.

does anyone else think its unfair that people who order on steam get better stuff?

i mean... unless it costs more, then its completely unfair, because all steam orderers have to do is log on and BAM theyve got it, i preordered the Collectors edition and i have to walk to the store, which is a little farther than my computer

Slightly miffed

Before this I wasn't even remotely considering getting HL2 from steam, but now that the soundtrack and posters are only available in the Gold pack, it's tipped the scales a bit. I really have no use for an XL t-shirt and the Prima book is sounding pretty lame. I was hoping the CE would have soundtrack, poster, and an artbook (concept drawings, 3D modelling pictures etc.)

I'm surprised Vivendi isn't retaliating by putting more fancy doo-dads into the CE. I guess they assume (and rightly I might add) that a lot of people aren't considering steam.

I'm not going to whine about my options. I'm a huge HL fan and I will probably get the Gold package. I really think that services like Steam are the future of gaming. However, I will miss collecting game boxes. I've kept every box I've ever bought even after I sell the CDs! They're commemorative.

It is disappointing to see that Valve and Vivendi's legal matters have spilled over into this area. It's pretty sad when you're suing the people you're supposed to be working with. If they had managed to solve their differences, I'm sure everyone (or at least the majority) would be able to get exactly what they wanted.

people need to stop being so ignorant and blaming valve for what comes in retail boxes. thats decided by vivendi. and as far as 'having that hard copy' goes, you still will be using steam to play, as hl2 is integrated with steam, and thus all the vulnerabilities are still there. you can burn your cache files, so you dont have to *redownload* the *5-6* gigs of data if your going to format, get a new pc, etc. the only reason at this point to consider purchasing a retail package is if for a) some strange reason you WANT to give money to VUG, or b) your attatched to your materialistic box and printed CD cover.

I dunno if anybody has pointed this out yet and I am not about to read through all 14 pages, but we all see they haven't released the pricing for these versions. Well I have the collectors edition pre-ordered (have for about 1.2 years lol). Anyway, I got pissed when I saw all that was in the Gold Steam version and then saw the puny offerings in comparison to the Collectors Edition. But then I realized, didn't Valve originally say way back when that there would be one option that was a subscription service (ie: you pay a monthly fee?) If this is the case I am willing to bet that the gold package requires you to pay like 10-20 bucks a month to have access to all of Valve's games. If this is the case I think I would rather just pay the one time fee and get my collectors edition. What do you guyz think?

The subscription service won't be added unless they can provide quality content addons each month.

The pricing will be announced next week, along with shipping handling and fees.

I dunno I bet they can considering TF2 is on the horizon...Maybe they are even willing to deal with these other game manufacturers they are licensing the source engine out to? Doubtful but possible none the less. Besides that lets think about this, there is no HL deathmatch, no source versions of blue shift or opposing force. They have content to add each month. A subscription would be a smart business move, but I dont know how many people would actually buy into that idea. I know personally I would rather pay a one time fee vs a recurring cost every month.

Just 1 question, if you buy the gold package, then they send you the posters and stuff, but do they also send you a cover and cds?
