I'm a sucker for WW2 shooters and in it's day this game reigned supreme. I love the D-Day landing and it's fun to go back a play a game that was willing to kick your ass from time to time. AI was always piss poor but that came hand in hand with games of that era. It's funny though to go back and have your enemies always being able to spot you while you have no idea where all these bullets are coming from and when you realized that your enemy was behind 2 bushes or off in some tiny sniping spot or off in the grey distance because of rendering limitations, it made the kill satisfying. AA hasn't aged well but is a must play for FPS gamers.

Dawn of War II Beta - 8.5/10

If you have played both DoW and CoH then you will enjoy this. The fundamentals of DoW are still there, but as said before a lot of little things were added from Company of Heroes. The cover system has been added, along with heavy gun setups and buildings to control. My biggest gripe is that sometimes it seems that there isnt enough scenery around. A lot of the places feel too empty compared to CoH landscapes, and that's dissapointing, as I didnt get to implement as many defensive strategies as I would have liked. Going along with that is that this game also requires you to work at a VERY fast pace, so I highly recommend you play against bots until you fully get the hang of it.

I've only played as the Space Marines and the Eldar so far, but have faced both the Tyranids and Orks. The Eldar are extremely powerful for some odd reason. They can make a bunch of squads with little resources, and have a super-unit that is very hard to stop. The Space Marines suck in comparison, their squads only have 3 people (why?) and do not have a super-unit (the Predator tank is nowhere near as strong). Maybe if I play more I'll get used to it.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous. The units are extremely detailed and the effects are awesome. Even more impressive is the sound. Although the Eldar weapons sound dinky sometimes, the sound of an Avatar stomping around gives it a sense of mass and power.

Overall, fun to play, but I suck a lot. Gonna play more to improve my speed.

MOHAA got me into PC gaming. That game has consumed lots of my youth. Its a shame EA took a dump on it and the series but hey, thats EA for you.

Not the best in the series, but ties up with the lore from the previous games quite nicely. As always, it's still creepy as hell. Reminds me of that movie Room 1408 how Henry is trapped in his apartment by some evil force and all. Story is amazingly deep for a video game. Almost Hollywood caliber imo. Too bad there was no Hollywood caliber voice acting though. Cheesy voice overs almost spoiled the suspense at times.

I wonder how good SH origins is. Any opinions?

    Rainbow Six Vegas - 7/10

Just finished it...decent game. I liked the cover system, graphics are pretty good(for the time), and the game is actually quite challenging. The little story that is there is fairly well-executed too. The last mission was intense(although the ending sucked).

It really didn't feel like the Rainbow Six I played a long time ago on the PS1 though...aside from the story and recharging health stuff, the scenarios that your team are sent through seem very implausible. Although I'm sure real-life special forces are badass, I doubt that anyone sane would send three of them alone through a building crawling with dozens upon dozens of well-armed and trained mercenaries. Also, is it just me or does it seem poorly optimized for a 2006 game? Or maybe I'm just spoiled by Valve's optimization.

Overall I liked it though. I might pick up Vegas 2 some time in the future, but with my new laptop I have tons of other games released over the last two years which take priority.

    Synergy - 8/10

Not the most polished or professional mod in the world, but still incredible amounts of fun, especially with some of the ridiculous custom maps.

I think the idea in-game was because it was all over Vegas, the R6 team were very thinly spread trying to attack multiple terrorist targets.

Also, yes, it was very badly optimised, the sequel ran much better though.

I guess that makes sense. Still, I doubt a three-man squad in real-life, no matter how good, would survive some of the situations that you run into in Vegas.

IIRC, in the more realistic first game most levels would have barely over a dozen enemies, and yet they'd be every bit as difficult as Vegas.

    Final Fantasy XII - 9/10

Great game. Captivating story that's told well. Challenging gameplay and lots of it.

The only downside is its length is absolutely ridiculous. It took me 80 hours to finish the game, making it the longest game i've ever played. Most of that was just grinding between dungeons so i didn't get trounced in the next one. Still i enjoyed it a lot. Its pretty much a Japanese take on Star Wars.

No whiny characters (or at least, Vaan stops acting like a bitch a short way through the game) and some really cool level design and overall design. But again, way too much grinding. There were moments when i could not for the life of me figure out what im doing because i've spent so longer grinding or trudging through one area that i've forgotten the storyline.

Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit, and I said 'goodbye', and you were like 'no waii', and then I was all 'we pretended we were going to murder you...that was greaaaat'.

    Anyway.

Dawn of War 2 Beta (After New Patch) - 9/10

Its definitely improved it, made games faster with points coming in quicker, more focus on the battles now. Eldar nerfed as always...

    Final Fantasy X-2 - 8/10

I know i'm gonna get some stick for this, but i really enjoyed it. It's a lot more light-hearted than X and XII and it does bring closure on the FFX story. The story made be laugh and was just more fun than the sober doom and gloom of X. Another thing i like was the ability to choose how you play the missions in any order you want. This also runs great in PCSX2 at a solid 60FPS with minimal glitches.

Just finished it and loved so much of it. Combat got better and better as time went on, the Cutscenes had juicy plot and above all the game entertained. I've been renting this game for months but finally decided to keep playing. There were 2 times when I felt like throwing my controller, but coming back to it after a break helped a lot. great rental imo, but too short to buy

You think so? I thought that was where the game started to dip even more severely into the wankfest territory. Mainly the big boss at the end.

I have a 2 hour commute each way to work these days and my love for the DS is now verging on obsessive. My last 3 months:

Big Bang Mini, 8/10. Great for pick and play 30 minute bursts, but not something for prolonged sessions. You control the ship/triangle/whatever on the bottom screen and move it around with the stylus to avoid projectiles coming down from the top. You fire fireworks at the ships/panda bears/dragons on the top screen with a matchstick lighting type flick of the stylus. Simple, fun, very pretty and frantic. It's worth getting just to see the top screen filling with firework explosions :)

    Check it out

Meteos, 8/10. Very late to the party with this. The best Tetris evolution/spin-off.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, 7/10. Dripping with old skool vampire goodness.

Metal Slug 7, 7/10. Very hard, yet compulsive scrolling shooter that, despite the odd slow down, plays wonderfully on the DS.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, 8/10. Cheesy fantasy rpg/strat filled with art thous and chivalrous happenings. If you're new to the series think Advance Wars with a tiny bit of Civ, but with knights, archers and wizards. It differs in that every unit has a name (i've become worryingly attached to a young axeman named Bord) and can be levelled up throughout the game. Typical story - claiming back a kingdom from an evil tyrant - and pretty epic.

Chrono Trigger, 8/10. After all these years Chrono Trigger is still lovely. Enhanced visually and utilising both screens and stylus, it looks and plays better than ever. Chrono Trigger both shows how much games have moved on in recent years, but also how much charm and charactcer has been lost in the process.

Disgaea, 7/10. Turn/grid based rpg/strategy with endless tweaking, customisation and levelling. If you get sucked in you can lose 100's of hours (I know someone who put over a 1000 hours into the PS original!). It's the kind of game you either give 7/10 to - acknowledging the depth, but not jumping in - or 10/10, your house, wife, job and car.

LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, 8/10 (second visit). Simpler than Wind Waker, but more pick up and play friendly. You contol Link entirely with the stylus and it works beautifully. There's all the usual charm and polish you'd expect from a Zelda title along with some embarrassing (if you're on a packed train) having to blow on the screen to blow out fire moments. It still amazes me that we can walk around with a tiny handheld that contains these sprawling gameworlds in our pockets.

Ganbare Goemon: Toukai Douchuu Ooedo Tengurigaeshi no Maki, ?/10. My biggest gaming disappointment in years. It looks stunning and plays, when you know what's going on, as you'd expect from a Goemon game (i.e. ****ing awesome). It isn't being released outside of Japan, though! For hours i've tried to struggle through the story - not having a ****ing clue what i'm doing, how to save properly, or what the controls are - and it's driving me to distraction. **** you Konami in your big fat arse.
