Thought I'd share this scary story, something that happened to me last night.

I usually take about a hour walk every night within my neighborhood. I am extremely familiar with it, been living here for almost twenty years.

I was about twenty-thirty minutes walking distance from my home. This was all on side streets. So keep in mind it was secluded and rather dark.

I did some simple illustrations to explain what happened. First I came up to a four way intersection. I began heading down the road east of the intersection. The East road is unusually dark.

Behind me I can hear a car coming from the West. I hear the car slow down and honk twice. I turn my head expecting to see a friend, or a neighbor. I see neither of these. I see a totally unfamiliar old car, with a driver who is wearing a dirty white tank top, he is semi-well built. I cannot see his face. There might be someone in the passenger's side, if there is, they are dressed too dark to see. This is not someone I know.

The car goes to the side of the road, and turns off their lights. Honks twice again. I am about fifteen feet away.
Okay, so this is a little weird. I am either expecting to be A) Asked for directions. B) Mugged/Shot.
But the car just sits there... the windows don't even roll down. Okay.

So, I am creeped, I want nothing to do with this, and I begin walking swiftly towards the South road, for two reasons. 1) If they ARE pursuing me, I will find out this way. 2) It would make them put their car in reverse, make a sharp turn, and put their car in drive again. Basically, it would give me more time to escape, because if I just ran down the east road in a straight line, there is no question if they would catch me.

Well. That is exactly what they did. They aggressively put their car in reverse, and pulled up next to me on the south street. They followed me with each step, and stopped each time I stopped. They stopped again, honked their horn twice. They have no lights on. They never rolled down their window or said anything. I shrug at them, at least hoping for some response. Nothing. At this point I am fairly certain this person wants me to approach their car or get in.

So I think... I have to do this one more time to get them off of me. So once again. I walk towards the east road. They of course follow me aggressively.

I stop for a moment to get them to slow down. And then I turn and run as fast as I ****ing can for the South road again. I don't bother to look behind me, but I catch a glimpse of their car, furiously going back in reverse, nearly driving onto the side walk. Tires screeching.

As I am running south, I take a quick glance and look for a house with lights on. Hoping I may be able to find someone who is home, or at least lose my pursuers quickly enough before they see where I went.
I see a house with garage lights on. I am hoping that someone is home. Also hoping, that IF someone is home, they do not mistake me for an attacker.
I run to that driveway. NO ONE is there. ****. I can hear the car. Behind me. They are searching for me. I run swiftly through four more backyards.

I crouch behind a house, and I hear the car slow down. I am peeking over the edge. Hoping that my pursuers don't come out of their car and search for me on foot.
I wait a second or two, which felt like forever. Suddenly, they step on the gas and go about 40 MPH down the 25 MPH road.

I wait for a minute, in case they are waiting for me around the bend. I creep over to a bush and peek down the road, and I see no cars. I figure, I better get the **** out of here before they return. So I do. I take the darkest road so that I will be harder to spot. On the way back home, I hid from nearly every car I saw approaching at a distance.

    Shiiit. Glad you're safe.

Stories like this are very scary to me. Here in Finland you can pretty much walk outside anywhere at any time and feel completely safe. It's hard to believe that in the U.S. parents don't let their kids walk to school and back home alone.

Pat, that's just crazy. If that would happen to me, I'd definitely be scared and also a bit excited.

You should have kept going back and forth like **** until they crashed into something. They probably thought you had drugs or something. Or maybe thought you were a hooker. You probably look like a hooker in the dark.

My initial thoughts. Still, you never know. Sounds like the car was being driven by a total douche either way.

    That's really ****ing weird.

How did the car get off that bridge and onto the north-south road so easily though?

There isn't much I can say to the police. I can barely describe cars beyond "rectangular" "old" and "redish color". Also I didn't have a good enough look at the pursuer. Also, didn't get a plate number.

What really pisses me off, is there are ALWAYS cops on that street during the evening and afternoon, pulling people over for going 30 in a 25... There is even a cop who lives on that street, who puts up one of those speed-detectors in his yard so he can pull people over off duty.
But where the **** are they when people actually need them?

Indeed. At first I thought that was what they were doing, but I didn't care either way. It wasn't worth playing it cool, when there was a possibility that they actually wanted to harm me. Either way, **** em. I still think they were mugging people though. They could have been just ****ing with random civilians... but the circumstances are weird, and the fact that they kept honking when they stopped clearly meant they wanted me to approach the car.

I was really hoping that one of the times reversing, they would have hit a tree or something. Would have been ****ing hilarious.

Man that's crazy shit. Glad your alright, bro.

This exact reason is why I think everyone should carry a knife.. You did the right thing, I'm not saying you should've pulled your knife out and ran at them like a crazy ****, but in case they did catch you or whatever you would've had SOME kind of defense. Normally I carry around a small 3'' blade folding knife, but in your case (walking at night, alone) I carry my 8'' blade assault/combat knife on my belt. Not to fight, but really if I was in your situation and pulled that ****er out they'd be crazy to stick around. Unless they had guns, in which case I'd be ****ed. But I'm in Canada so it's kind of unlikely.

All rambling aside, as I said before: Crazy shit, glad you're ok :)

Cocaine is a hell of a drug (to buy).

But that was unusually aggressive for a buyer. So maybe they thought you were someone else... mob related?

Yikes, really scary. Good choice to hide. Wonder if they were trying to follow you home and mug you while you have to fumble with the keys to open your door. Maybe carry a cellphone? Supposedly if you make like you're calling the police, that can scare someone away.

I thought you'd recognize me. Sorry.

Seriously though... that shit is scary. Just be careful dude. Be careful of the dudes looking to harass you on foot in those dark alleys and roads. And if you see mother****ers just lined up against the wall, turn around immediately.

Creepy as ****, glad nothing happened.

Had a vaguely similar experience tonight actually. Got accosted by some guy who kept trying to make forced chit-chat with me while I was walking on a secluded side street after dark. I say forced because he was on the other side of the ****ing street and calling out to me, not exactly standard behaviour. Kept asking what I was up to and where I was going, and when I tried to answer he called back "what?" and started crossing over as though to hear me better, even though I was speaking perfectly clearly. Said he'd stick with me until I got to where I was going, which even if not malicious is a ****ing creepy thing to say to someone you met 10 seconds ago on a dark side street. Was getting pretty uncomfortable at this point so I quickened my pace and made a beeline for where I was going, then as I'm just heading in I hear him call out, "know where to get a tinnie?" lol.

    What, why?

Once you get around the folding and combat knife, the cleaver he keeps taped to his back, the razor blade under his tongue , the balisong up his sleeve, the pair of switchblades in his shoes, and the machete running up his pant leg, he seems like a really righteous dude

Hey what kind of person do you think I am?

I'm not some defenseless wimp, don't forget about the throwing knives across the chest, the katana on my back, and the ballistic knife up my OTHER sleeve. What kind of man do you take me for?

Don't be scurred though, mutoid. We can still be friends.. FOREVER AND EVER.

This exact same thing happened to me in my last neighborhood. I ran and ran (and was still pursued) until I got enough distance by running through lawns so he couldn't see/hear me. I acted like I lived in one of the mansions and actually called the cops and knocked on the door. By the time anyone had answered/helped the man driving the beat up blue car was long gone and I scanned the area from the bushes for a good while until I sprinted home. The police called back (yeah, the emergency responders literally weren't available in my small town.) and asked for a profile. It for a guy who was doing serial robberies and possibly rapes. D: I'm glad you're alright, dude.

I live in a relatively bad neighborhood. It used to be safer but as of recently drug dealers, thugs, and low lives have been filling up around us. Sometimes there's shootouts we can hear late at night, other times the cops are at the corner house arresting someone. And even 6 months ago or so SWAT had to enter a house a street over and apparently the guy shot himself after a day long stand off. When my girlfriend and I walk our dog we both have our cell phones on and are pretty cautious about which streets to pick.

As for your instance, I'd definitely start walking with a friend or with a cell phone and tell someone you're going on a walk. Perhaps a jog would be a little bit safer too as you'll tone up better and when needed you can outrun those cars. I'm hoping the people driving just wanted to do the hib, and that they were hot females trolling around. But in all seriousness a local gym membership might be the safest bet. You'll meet much nicer people there
