So, now I'm bored of some of my newer games like Borderlands 2, and got off my revived addiction to Torchlight, I decided to go through my Steam list and have a go at some of the old FPS games that have not been played in ages, or yet to be played. There are some gems in there. And some godawful ones.

A replay of Return to Wolfenstein was just as fun as always!
Booting up Max Payne, which I enjoyed the first time was just.... painful (no pun intended)
    Half-Life - Always good regardless
Deus Ex - How can such an awesome game have become so... intolerable over time? :S
E.Y.E. - Ok, not so old, but it feels like its been in my list for ages... really not a fan so far. The controls just feel 'off' and the story is just confusing as hell.
FEAR - Still love that game, even though its been a while, it still scares the shite outta me!

But, the one game I've finally given some time that I'm finding really fun for some reason I can't explain, is Red Faction.

Anyone else go through their Steam list and discover that something they bought on impulse, or cos it was cheap then ignored it... actually got them addicted to it when they finally played it?

The only game I own on Steam are the ones from the Orange Box and some other freebies, because for some reason I'm having problems with my credit card (can't pay for games there) and I can only buy physical game copies to register on Steam, but I've got a whole box of games next to my desk, and I can list some of the ones I still enjoy:
Urban FreeStyle Soccer (idk, fo some reason I really like it, even though it's only a simple, old soccer game)
Call of Duty (1) - I love WWII games, and this one is pretty good, especially for the time it was released in.
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault - same as above
Half-Life 2 - Yeah, I guess we can already say this game is pretty old! I'm a big fan of it, of course ^^ (the only game from Steam on the list)

    Yeah, that's all, I guess :)
I'm not a no-life gamer and I haven't really got a lot of games, just about 20-25 of them.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault is also a really good World War II game, you should try it if you haven't already, came out just a year before Call of Duty.

The Wheel of Time FPS game is awesome. Unreal 1 engine never looked so good.

It was the first multiplayer FPS I ever played and is still Top 3 for me.

    Duke Nukem 3D
    Blood

The two amazing build engine games that were a huge part of my pc gaming childhood.
Blood is especially noteworthy because almost nobody has heard of it or played it, but it is as good as if not better than DN3D.

You can get them on GoG.

You kidding, right? Pacific Assault is one of the worst games I have ever played in my life.

    my recommendations:
    sin (ritual)
    redneck rampage (xatrix)
    kingpin (also from xatrix)
    no one lives forever (monolith)
    undying (can be really frustrating)
    unreal
requiem (broken scripts, but it's still worth it)

Really? I usually destroy my nostalgia goggles whenever I replay an old game, but Deus Ex I still play every now and then, and I still enjoy it immensely.

Hidden and Dangerous 2 would be the only other shooting game I could actually recommend thats old. In general I find that old shooters don't age well at all. H&D2 was well ahead of it's time though.

Haven't played many old FPS games recently, but The Chronicles of Riddick is a great game that pays homage to the source material (not that old though).

Duke 3D was a riot! Liked Unreal too back in the day. was never a fan of the MoH or CoD games tbh.
I always loved the Deus Ex games. And I love playing my older games to this day. Mostly. I don't know why I've went off the first one, its kinda disturbed me its happened...

I still really enjoy Red Faction too. I'd love to play Halo CE again, that game was a blast. Of course most of the recommendations here too are great. Duke 3D and Medal of Honour Allied Assault (or Frontlines but I don't think that had a PC version) I have fond memories of.

Here's the gist of my must-place list. I know I must be forgetting some major ones:

Singularity (please, please play this gem)
Jedi Knights II + JK: Jedi Academy
    Soldier of Fortune 1/2

Splinter Cell: Conviction (3rd person, but excellent)
    Painkiller (the original)
    Crysis 2
    Spec Ops: The Line
    Star Wars: Republic Commando
    Dark Forces II
Wolfenstein (Raven remake, underrated, ignore reviews)
    Ghost Recon + Expansions
    System Shock 2
    Alien vs. Predator 2 <--- really a must-play campaign
    No One Lives Forever
    No One Lives Forever 2
    Swat 4
    Vietcong
    Thief series
    Nexuiz (the freeware version)
    Hitman: Blood Money
    Payday: The Heist
    Bioshock
    Blood
    Hexen 1/2
    Tron 2.0 (Monolith Games)
    Serious Sam 1/2
    Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal 2
    Brothers in Arms series
Sniper Elite v.2 (wait for a price drop)
    Heretic
    The Darkness II

Jedi Academy, System Shock 2, AVP 2, Raven Shield, Flashpoint, Vampire, Sniper Elite (the first one, though), and Swat 4 are great, great, great games. Agreed with most of BabyHeadCrabs list.

Oh god.... Heretic/Hexen! I loved those.... I remember one of my biggest scare moments in a game ever was in Heretic, with one of those little red flying imp things... One of those cheap-shouldn't-have-jumped scares.
    Love my Bioshocks too...
I've got that Nexuiz in my list, but not played it yet.
The new Wolfenstein is pretty good too. Bloody hard in places, I thought.

The Nexuiz on Steam is AWFUL. Do not even install it. I'm talking about the Open Source freeware game they based it on with a lovely, thriving online community.

Jedi Academy holds a dear place in my heart. I even bought it on steam when it was $2.50. Just thinking about how I used to go online and saber duel in servers....they haven't made as fun a game since.

I was going to add Commander and Conquer: Renegade, but realized it must be dried up by now. :(

Renegade X is cool but not the same.

God, I can't believe I forgot about JK II and Academy. My favourite Star Wars games to date, I'm so mad they never continued that series. Republic Commando was also pretty cool, wouldn't mind seeing another one of those either.

Okay, yeah, these ones too. However, if you play these, you may experience a bout of depression, as you'll realize how far we've fallen as far as FPS games go.

Also, the Jedi Knight games aren't FPS games. They're third person lightsaber games. You were playing the game wrong if it was an FPS to you.

Also, it's not an FPS, but Heretic II is baller.

(P.S. don't play the Medal of Honor reboot.)

Yeah, you are missing out if you never messed around with the weapons in that game. Don't get me wrong, the saber fights were awesome and IMO haven't been done better since then, but playing rocket tag using force push was awesome times :D

Funny you mention Blood. I'd never heard of it.
Last night, I was out with some mates having a beer and I brought up this thread and the games you lot have brought up and one of them near fell off his stool at the mention of Blood. Which he went on to tell us, in great detail, of how awesome it was. It was quite unnerving, his fervour for Blood. I'm even more inclined to hunt down a copy now.

I was sure at least half of the weapons in Heretic were shooty staffs or gauntlets?

Heretic II was third person. You still shot stuff but you also did a decent amount of platforming and acrobatics and junk.

    Awesome. I'm not surprised though!

If you do get it, contact me on steam because there is a badly needed tweak you have to do to get the mouse aiming to work well.
