So, we'll use this as our location for the game as it's being released/is released. Can't wait....
Oh no you didn't!
WE CANT WAIT FOR FOUR DAYS
North Americuh fags.
I thought the beta was going to remain open until launch >: ( I don't see why they've closed it, surely they can work on an internal build leaving the beta live!
Is there going to be an official HL2.net server? I've been thinking about purchasing one but don't want to if someone else is.
I was thinking the same. I'll pitch in. Also I wanted to kinda hack the beta to keep playing. Too bad there are no dedicated servers to continue playing but, oh well.
Would be cool to get our own TS or Vent server too. Playing without voicecom is like having sex without genitals. The ingame voicecom is kinda crap.
Steam has voice chat.
Or skype. Or dabomb's ventrilo. You set up a Steam group right?
The in-game one is good, and so is Steam.
yeah it's going to be dope can't wait...wish I had a Dx11 card
Steam works fine for Pitz and I.
Yeah, Steam was fine.
Meh. Ive only used Steam Voice once, and it was an awful experience. Voice activation would cut off while talking, sound quality was bad, lots of static, and lack of advanced options.
But if they have updated it then i guess its ok. As long as i can get my point across without having to repeat myself and others going "WHAT? WHAT? I CANT HEAR YOU? DUDE UR MIC IS ****ED! WHAT?"
Plus you can use it for cross-squad chat if you're playing with more than 4 people.
It's your sound settings on your computer. If you have to boost the line in volume in TS or vent, it's your fault.
Was browsing around today looking at different server providers. I think we have a near equal split of NA and Euro players and I think the best place to get a server out of is either New York or Virginia.
1. Nuclear Fallout -- one of the highest quality NA server providers.
24 slot ranked, month-to-month subscription plan is $50. Which might seem high for 24 slots but it also comes with a free 10 slot Ventrilo server and free webhosting (which we probably don't need.)
If you preorder through NFO, you get 25% discount if you order before release date, and that deal is good as long as you have the server. Normal price for 24 slots is $66.
24 slot ranked, month-to-month is $40. This is cheaper but it doesn't include a Ventrilo.
Discount is 15% if you preorder.
3. Art of War Central
24 slot ranked, month-month is $45. This also doesn't include a Ventrilo, which can be ordered for an additional $3.
I think a 24 slot server is the best way to go, since it is a reasonable price and a good number of slots. To save money, we could go to 16 slots but I feel that is pushing the limit for the number of available slots. Now, I don't mind fronting the cost for the first month, but it'd be for the first month only. Meaning, I can't afford to drop $50/month seeing as I'm in school and I don't have a job. It can either rotate among members, or have members donate. Donations would probably be better seeing as we'd only need 10 people donating $5 a month to keep the server going.
We are going to have to look into it. Historically hl2.net and servers do not mix (ask CyberPitz). We could certainly do the 16 server deal as we have to look at who will actually be playing on the server. These are my tips:
Who will be playing on the server? 16 hl2.net members or a mix of people?
Public or Private server? Public servers cost more.
We don't need the bells and whistles.
Will we actually use the server? Biggest question of them all.
The hl2.net TF2 server is hosted by some charitable company. It's a shame they only do Source games and don't offer a discount. Their loss though. But I would say look for a charitable server.
If you got an old PC that can be converted to a server, go for it! Though I doubt that will happen because ideally you want a multi-core CPU server with at least 4GB of RAM. You also have to be located in the right spot and have a good internet connection.
Anybody have any DX10/11 comparison shots?
Ahahaha, 6 days. Sux 4 u
for those who haven't played it, is it worth it? How does it compare to bf 2?
Mix of people. We will almost never have enough people here to warrant a dedicated server just for hl2.net members.
Public. Same reason as above.
I would, and im sure many others would as well.
If this were a few months from now, I would probably be doing this with my quadcore pc with 8 gigs of ram. But alas, its next week, and way before I plan to upgrade.
And as a side note, I think 16 players is lame as shit.
@ Hazar. Check the beta thread for more opinions, but in short... yes it is, and its better than bf2, or at least I think it is.
Imo, even better than BF2.
lol How are people going to make the comparisons if they haven't played it yet?
I assume that's a typo.
Anyway. I enjoyed the beta more than BF2 to be honest. This focuses much more on infantry gameplay than BF2 does. The controls feel less clunkier and are much more organic than any of the previous games. Vehicles are there for support but they don't dominate the battlefield like they did in the other games. There's a balance here when it comes to those two aspects of the game. None of the previous titles had that balance.
He wasnt asking them, he was asking for them.
He should have phrased it correctly then.
He did, by saying "for those". Not "To those."
I have about the same, if not slightly more fun than BF2. It's weird and impossible to explain.
As for a server, we'll want to go public. That way when no hl2.netters are on, others can get use. At least we aren't wasting money then.
Be prepared for it to be pretty barren most of the time at startup.
East coast is definitely a good idea for location. Even though the game doesn't really lag TOO much, I'd even stretch and say UK wouldn't be bad.
lol, thanks for the defense krynn
I'm still on the line about buying it, on one hand it looks fun and preordering seems to give you quite an advantage, but on the other hand supcom 2 is going to dominate my gaming time here in a few days.
I say that with SC2 beta
Yes, I gotta say it's better than BF2 as well. The Limited Edition (which is the same price as standard) is available until March 16th. I'm willing to pitch in, but it has to be real cheap. I play Eve Online, but I don't even pay monthly for that. I did get an e-mail from Art of War Central:
I think if we pre-order like they said, and having everybody in the group like 16 of us pitch in, it's only $3.78 every month for a year for a 32 man server (total of $34 for 16 people at the end). Also instead of $60 every month, the promo code makes it $45.36.
So more than MW2 as well. That is pretty cool. DICE played this very well.
And I'll chip in for a server as well. I do hope though that it gets played more than the TF2 community server.
If I might play the part of the pessimist here for a second, I must say that I really can't see monthly donations working with this community. Might be better to build up a 3 month reserve first, then start renting one.
I also still think 16 players is lame as shit.
ve3d is ripping IGN for their review of BC2 lol
Some of those seem pretty valid. Especially the presentation and graphics. Considering thats pretty much all MW2 did, they definitely win in that department I think. Lasting appeal of MW2 should have been a 6 though. There is no way MW2 has more lasting appeal than BC2.
If MW2 got a 10 in the sound department, BC2 should get an 11.
QFT. BC2 just creates an amazing atmosphere with sound.
