I just wanted to collect some data on this forum, since I've been seeing patterns in the recent polls, I wanted to see just how the political affiliation of the members of this board pans out. So, just choose something that you think best fits you in the poll.

I would describe myself as a moderatley left-wing progressive liberal.

I hate labels, especially in politics. But if I had to go with anything it'd be left wing pragmatist (by that I mean that im very left wing on economic issues, but I recognize that they are not always likely to work in practice, hence the pragmatist part). So I guess in practice I'm centrist, maybe centre left.

On Social issues I try to go by the rule that the freedom to swing your fist ends at the other person's nose - ie you should be able to do what you like so long as it does not harm/infringe on the freedoms of others. Also, this is far more important to me than the economic side of things.

Edit: I dont like your poll, its based on the politcal spectrum, which is rubbish. Political Compass FTW

I know, political affiliations are measured in two dimensions, but I am limited by a linear poll, and lack of options.

Fairy nuff. Im guessing the majority of people here will be centrist/left wing. All the right wing crazies have been banned, and the sane right wingers seem to have buggered off too. Which is a pity.

    1) Centrist
    2) Economic Right, Social Centrist
    3) Economic Right, Social Authoritarian
    4) Economic Centrist, Social Authoritarian
    5) Economic Left, Social Authoritarian
    6) Economic Left, Social Centrist
    7) Economic Left, Social Libertarian
    8) Economic Centrist, Social Libertarian
    9) Economic Right, Social Libertarian

    ;)

As far as I know, I'm a centrist leaning toward the economic left and social libertarian corner. No big business, rich people suck, nothing's wrong with gays, etc. I've been going through the Political Compass Web site and methodically answering every question, though, so in a few weeks I hope to have the most accurate picture possible of me.

Our most notable right wing crazies were Nat Turner and Bodacious, both of whom were essentially parody caricatures of the uberconservative stereotype. Any people who've been banned from this site have not been banned because of their political affiliation (excepting the crazies we get from time to time who sign up merely to post a thread saying they're going to suicide bomb Finland, which we generally delete and ban right away) but because their conduct was unacceptable.

Idealistically speaking, I'm very much a supporter of true anarchism, but I'll settle for socialism as I realize an anarchist society is not a realistic goal.

Can't stand capitalism though. I think that political systems should be based on altruism, or at the very least neutral in that respect. All capitalism does is ensure that our politicians care more about themselves than the people they represent and work for.

Would you really be content with a far more colloquial world?
Anarchism just seems like such a regressive step from the expansive world we have.

Then what the hell am I, It seemed to fit best. Ahwell I chose other so now I can go out and look for a more appropriate label.

EDIT: Plus I do agree with what Technocracy is trying to accomplish but only so far as it leads to my other stated aims.

Nat Turner was more of a libertarian and a classical liberal. He had some good ideas.

Then that rape thread came and he just went overboard...

While I'd miss things like computers, the internet, etc, I think we'd be gaining far more than we'd be giving up. It brings us back to being true humans.

Personally, I don't see isolated (essentially tribal) societies to represent "true" humanity.
We've always reached out to others, explored new areas and people - expansion and mixing is our nature.

Well a random click(well it seemed interesting) on the Wikipedia front pagve lead me to a nice little artical that seems to sum up part of my thoughts for the future pretty well.

    Transhumanism

An interesting read if nothing else but I do share alot of goals with that train of thought so if you wanna put me down for transhumanism go ahead.

social libertarian, right wing economically. I simply voted right wing cause i think i have more in common with them than the lefties

I believe that you should be able to do anything provided you do not cause trouble for others

However i also believe that you should be free to make use of your money however the hell you wish. And those that can move it the best should be able to make use of it. I prefer the idea that people should not have to live off the teat of their government. Hand up not hand out.

I am especially very anti communism/socialism by the very nature of growing up in a Miami Cuban family where i keep hearing accounts from family members of how they were royally F***ed over by communism and all the corruptions that it has wrought.

Oh yeah and Nat Turner was a rape appologetist and i hate him, and 15357 is my favorite south korean on this forum

It's not as much about isolation; networking is a good idea, just not a unified governing body. When I said the line about true humans, I meant it'd take us back to our roots, make us appreciate life and experience that much more, and generally just make life a more valuable experience.

As it is, humanity is destroying the earth and themselves. It's also why I believe in aliens; the thought that we're the only life in the universe is unbearable to me because we're having such a bad go at it. We could be so much better.

I don't think humanity(Baring a cataclysm) could ever just regress to an agraian society willingly. Too much has been accomplished, Even with the major bungling and overall stupidity shown by us in general, to just return to a more basic way of life.

ah yes, let's appreciate life by dying of terrible diseases before we turn twenty because there is no infrastructure to support movement of medical supplies, getting attacked by our neighbor because he wants our stuff and then getting no justice after he steals it all due to the lack of court systems and police, abandoning all progress and goals and then falling into a state of turmoil and confusion which will eventually end in yet another dictatorship!

    Brilliant idea!

I'd say say the same as Gick.

Economically, I generally tend to support the left - but I like to think that's tempered by a fair amount of pragmatism. Frankly, I simply support whatever social structures deliver the most justice, equality and goodness for society.

As for liberties, I agree (kind of) with Thomas Hobbes: every freedom should be maximised as long as it doesn't restrict the freedom of others; a pre-historical society where a total 'state of licence' exists is in fact not very free at all, since everybody's "enslaved by fear". Hence, a balance must be struck.

What that balance is, and what constitutes restriction of freedom, is generally hotly debated. :p

    So, yeah. Liberal Ponce.

That was pretty interesting. I took the test and it placed me:
    Your political compass

    Economic Left/Right: -0.88
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.87

Which seems about right. Slight left.

Hold on a minute, wasnt Hobbes the guy who wrote The Leviathan (arguing for a dictatorship)? Bear in mind I havent read it yet, so I'm probably wrong.

Also, I like what the Liberal Democrats have to say on many things, especially 'an opposition to unaccountable power', be it right-wing (corporations) or left-wing (unions).
