• HDR Bloom Mod Released

Studio Radi-8, the team behind the Neotokyo Mod, have released a "mini-mod" which lets you play through Half-Life 2 singleplayer with a High-Definition Lighting (HDR) effect added. HDR Lighting is a way of rendering levels of brightness far higher than usual, so it generates an effect similar to staring at a very bright light in a dark room. Put simply, it makes the lighting look better and more realistic.

Here is a before and after example of the effect this mod has on the lighting, as well as an additional screenshot:

The effect is rather subtle, but it becomes more obvious when in motion. To download the mod, visit the mod's official website. Visit this thread for more screenshots. In order to play this mod, your video card must be able to support Pixel/Vertex Shaders 2.0.

Seems to just make everything look like a slightly blurred "dream sequence" from a Soap Opera. Unless it's really humid everywhere in HL2, the screens look a bit unrealistic. A bit too much.

Agreed - this looks pretty, but it ain't HDR. Bloom effects are often a consequence of decent HDR though.

    BS. Go play Far Cry.

I know this isn't true HDR, but it's a step towards what I want HL2 to look like - the lighting in HL2 needs a lot of work, in my opinion. Here's hoping that valve will give us the ability to run all levels in HDR
(I realises that this would require modifying every existing level, but it might happen.. some day.. when it's done :p)

    love that cellshader effect!

To me it seems more realistic because every object now has a reflection of an intense light like the sun or a light. even the shadows are more realsitic to me because of that. But you do have to play with the settings or it will really look like a dream effect in soap operas. I am already considering to play the whole game through again with this effect (I'll never play the original again, that's for sure) :D

the HDR is fake... and its ONLY the bloom, and it f**k's up the decal. The loading time is quite long. nut still this mod is more than i can make, sooo good job guys !

I have installed the Bloom mod and it does look interesting. I don't notice any of the changes others have mentioned about load times and frame rates.

I have to say that I find some areas a little too bright in contrast to the rest of the map. It doesn't lend a realistic feel. More like a bright spotlight with no source is shining on a white pipe, with no reflection around it.

I tried to follow the readme files instructions to adjust it in the console, but the command wasn't recognized. The console recognized: "mat_Bloom 1", but would not recognize: "mat_R8Bloom".

Anybody else tried to tweak it? - and if so, how?
