Actually, the reason the humans look so huge is because they apparently had all the creature designs down, and they did some tests for the player characters. They said it looked ridiculously stupid having a skinny little guy running around fighting the bulky standard Locust, so they had to make everyone bigger and the armor more bulky.

$60 for a game that'll probably just be a run of the mill shooter with nice graphics?

Pass... or atleast until it's $20/$30.

Or perhaps $60 dollars for a game with good multiplayer and online co-op for the main campaign?

That game looks awesome, And its not gay like Halo's combat.. It takes like 20 shots in the head to kill one of the humanoids. And if you shoot their chins they fall to the grounds, and get up a few seconds later. ITS A MUST TACTICAL! Also, one-hit kill chainsaw. I heart chainsaw.

I saw some more footage and heard some impressions in the newest 1UP Show and my interest has gone up a little for this game. The smaller, more team-oriented tactical kind of MP is starting to appeal to me (assuming I found some good teammates to play with).

I'm still skeptic about the SP gameplay. The stop and spray kind of gameplay that seems to show itself in the game seems like it'd get old quickly.

Oh, also, this "Active Reload" thing is lame to me. If I'm better than somebody out there, I want it to be because of my aiming skills, tactics and brains, not the fact that I timed a button press for an unrealistic reload that magically makes some of my next clip more powerful...

It looks very tactical though, unlike halo you cant get by without getting some cover.

Well it still looks like stop and spray gaming to me. Also, It was a few weeks ago, but I saw footage of SP where the player just jumped out from behind cover and ran around aimlessly getting shot at until he chainsawed one guy up close. The enemy had been just standing there just trying to kill him. The player was getting riddled with bullets but just used terrible tactics and got away with it.

If the game is gonna be tactical then the player and enemies should have a lot less health. I don't want to be taking cover only to pop out and fire an entire clip into one bad guy then do some active reload or whatever and do the same for the next guy. I want the enemy to maneuver on me. I want to run the risk of dying if I get caught in the open for a few seconds. I don't want constant spraying of these guns, I'd rather have burst fire or single shot precision.

Right now it still kinda looks like Halo 2 - vehicles + cover...and I hated Halo 2.

I'm not interested either. I suppose it kind of looks fun, but the art style is crock and I'm not expecting much substance from the singleplayer. And yeah Amish, I sort of agree with you on that front, it does look somewhat Halo 2ish. And that isn't a good thing.

It might be a good idea to not judge a game based on the style of play of a person.

GRAW is somewhat tactical, right ? Well, you can [attempt to] run and gun but people don't label that as some other FPS.

    Also, easily killed != tactical.

It's amusing how all of you are now going on about how bad the art direction is. When one of you say it, the rest jump on the bandwagon. :p

Atomic, you'll be waiting awhile for a demo. :O

It's no different from timing a shot well. It's things like this that can make a game a little more involved - something else to master - and is all good. As for realism and magic clips, this is a video game ;)

According to a few reports i've read, nailing the perfect reload while in frantic combat is actually very satisfying, and can give you an advantage that could make all the difference. Doing this well is part of being 'better than somebody out there'.

I've no problem in winning a fight by being able to keep a cooler head than my oppononent/s and having better timing.

How ****ing stupid do you have to be to slag off features in a game you haven't even played. God, this whole "Oh, I want to be negative against Gears of War"-thing is ridiculous.

Are... are you talking about Halo there, or GoW? Because that's not what it's like in Halo but either way, Halo would win at being 'tactical' in that aspect as 20 shots to the head in GoW is just silly. :|

I'm not a huge Gears fan, it looks fun and the graphics are great. Still, slagging of such a simple feature as the active download thing is so pointless.

Personally, I can't get into the hype of this game. I've got two freinds who are really looking forward to it, but I'm not so much. Yeah, the MP and online-co-op sound appealing, but then I see the gameplay and I just think ''meh'' straight away. I will get it, sure, but not untill next Summer or something.

Yawn. Looks like your run of the mill shooter to me. No thanks. If this is the kind of game kids are getting excited for nowadays I think I have the wrong hobby.

Which is why I'm still just skeptical. I don't want to base my entire opinion of the game based on that clip. I just want to see more evidence that you CAN'T do that and get away with it.

I think they need to go kind of hand in hand because what's the use of being careful to use cover and various tactics if you can withstand tons of gunfire from enemies? It's like in HL2 when they had you do the "stay off the lava" kind of game on the beach to avoid antlions. I got bored and just ran my ass across the beach (jumping onto something when my energy was out) and made it just fine. I don't want a tactical game to have tactics as an option.

Once again, I just need to see more footage of people playing to confirm it's not true.

I actually like the gritty look of the post-apocalyptic world kind of look. I think it could get tiring after a while if combat doesn't vary enough, but I hear that the environments do change. I haven't jumped on this bandwagon as you call it. Some people just don't care for drab environments like FEAR. I wasn't crazy about them, but they fit the game if you ask me and combat kept me entertained to the very end. The way I see it, if environments are getting old and boring, I can tolerate it as long as the rest of gameplay holds up and keeps hitting you with new interesting things.

I'm pretty sure the first sentence in my previous post said my interest has gone UP in this game since I saw the 1UP Show....yep...it did.

I don't see what's wrong with not liking a feature that has been announced and talked about in a game. That's kind of a big part of forming an opinion on a game before it's released or you get to play it... You take the features and qualities of the game and say to yourself, "Hmmm, what do I like? What don't I like?" Then you take the positives and weigh them against the negatives and...well I don't need to spell out the rest...I don't think.

I think the fact that I don't like the idea of Active Reload is because of what I said before. Timing is a good thing when used anywhere in the game (popping off a kill-shot - proper timing in various strategies), but a simple button press on a reload that can get you a huge advantage in a firefight doesn't appeal to me (taking the "huge advantage" from the 1UP Show - they said it helps you mow through 1.5 guys if you do it right).

The reason I kind of make a big deal about it is because I've always hated when a shooter has great potential in MP but gets screwed up by balance and small gameplay elements that take the skill out. It's like grenade launchers in BF2. They completely ruined infantry-based maps for the longest time because you couldn't go 100 yards without getting blown up by some tool using it. There was a bit of skill to use it - Oh my, you have to judge distance, how tough...

Sure it takes a little skill to time a reload right but that's not the kind of skill that should let you have a big advantage.

It also just doesn't seem to fit the whole tactical experience they're going for. Let's pretend a player that uses better tactics gets the jump on a player that just did a good reload. "WTF How did you kill me so fast?" "I reloaded n00b"

I'd actually like it if it just made for a slightly faster reload and forget the extra damage. Maybe they'll tone it down or make it really hard to actually get the extra damage effect or something but right now I'm not too hopeful.

Yeah, I'm totally negative towards this game because it's so cool and fun to do... I always TOTALLY agree with Samon (*long pause* NOT)...

Ever think that some of the people that aren't jumping for joy over this game might have legitimate reasons not to be obsessed with it?

Come guys, hop on the bandwagon, be coo0ol and slag the shit out of Gears of War, come on! e-penis extensions and c00l points included.

Yeah. Right. There's a terrifying squad of GOW haters dominating the forum. And all of our arguments are ridiculous because we don't like it. How dare we.

Just figured I'd chime in, that's bad tactics on the players part. If you know a well placed reload makes you better then good tactics would be to empty your gun getting in position for a mugging, reload and waste your opponent.

Other than that I'm looking forward to GOW as a simple mindless game, if I wanna think hard I'll play a more complex game.

I suppose that's true. I suppose my definition of "tactics" is about real-world tactics and taking cover and whatnot. It sounds like we could have a new "tactic" on our hands, empty your clip on purpose just to get the active reload so you can own the next guy you come across.

    What?

This game looks nothing like Halo.

What do they have in common? That they're both videogames?

Also: If you don't like kickass graphics, innovative gameplay features, online co-op, and a generally well-polished experience...fine don't get Gears. But for the rest of us this coming week is going to be very fun indeed.

He's talking about the Halo 2-style spray-fest that is appearing in various vids.

I agree graphics are kickass, but the gameplay that has been shown so far is not innovative. This isn't the first game to use cover or the "stop 'n spray" ("stop 'n pop") kind of gameplay. Online co-op will be fun, I just don't know anybody anywhere personally that has a 360 so when I eventually get a 360 I'd have to play with people that are all but strangers to me which could take some of the fun out of it. The game also looks pretty polished though.

we have seen 20 min of gameplay out of 10-12 hours. lets judge the whole game based on those few minutes :dork:

Well I kind of am because even other journalists that have been playing it a LOT (1UP Show reference again) mentioned the Halo quote that goes something like, "Get 30 seconds of core gameplay to be just plain fun and repeat it". The 1UP people mentioned this and they said GoW got their 30 seconds down. That leads me to believe gunplay isn't going to change a lot throughout the game.

This is all pre-judging. The kind of judging one does to decide if he/she wants to buy/play a game. You take a look at videos, impressions, comments and put the pieces together to see if you think the game will fit you. Everybody here did the EXACT same thing with HL2 and ANY other game that has ever been released. Why am I suddenly catching shit for making observations on videos? Be more defensive people...jesus.

Name some in which it does. If we're being fair, most shooters have the same gunplay from start to finish.

I'm not saying this as a negative thing. I mentioned this because of what cadaver said:

I don't think we'll see the gameplay changing a lot over the course of the game so I think the footage and impressions we have so far are a pretty accurate representation of what the full game will present us with.

All they need to do is have great AI and enjoyable gameplay and everything will work out. If they can match Halo 1 legendary, a lot of people will be pleased.

That's one of the reasons I like Halo so much - i'm fed up with games which issue us increasingly more powerful hardware, making earlier weapons pretty much redundant, in order to fight bigger monsters with more health. It was fine for Doom and Quake back in the day, but now it's time to move on.

I still think people are underestimating the importance of the online co-op mode.

Co-op is just about my very favorite style of gameplay, and far too few games include it and even less include it online.

In fact I can't remember one game, on any platform, that has included online co-op out of the box, except for Gears.

I'm sure they exisist, it they are definitely few and far between. It's going kick ass. End of story.
