The former writer of the Half-Life series, Marc Laidlaw, released Half-Life 2: Episode Three's plot on his personal website. We also included an edited version of the story by Gondile from Reddit.
I hope this letter finds you well. I can hear your complaint already, “Gertie Fremont, we have not heard from you in ages!” Well, if you care to hear excuses, I have plenty, the greatest of them being I’ve been in other dimensions and whatnot, unable to reach you by the usual means. This was the case until eighteen months ago, when I experienced a critical change in my circumstances, and was redeposited on these shores. In the time since, I have been able to think occasionally about how best to describe the intervening years, my years of silence. I do first apologize for the wait, and that done, hasten to finally...
It would appear that Valve are gearing up to release their documentary film surrounding the world of Dota 2 and the lives of the gamers that play it. A new post from Kotaku's Jason Schreier indicates that Valve are in the process of screening the film to test audiences over the course of the next month. The article includes confirmation from Valve's own Doug Lombardi, who says that they will be "Beta testing" the documentary at this year's Dota 2 International in August.
The following trailer for the film "Free to Play" surfaced last year, just before the 2012 International event in August.
You may remember that Valve also released a 20-minute behind-the-scenes video back in November, focusing on last year's tournament. Lombardi was keen to note the difference between the...
A small team of Valve game developers, including Jeep Barnett and Christine Phelan, have built "Lamarr Goes to the Zoo" in a 48 hour game jam over the weekend. They used Construct 2, an intuitive game editor, which was a learning experience for all of them as Jeep noted in this Facepunch post.
It's a F2P title with a dash of hat simulation. Okay, it's not a "title," but more like a small personal project. You can download both the game (58MB) and the Construct 2 (90MB) files from Jeep's site if you'd like to give it a shot.
In this week's short-ish Round-Up, we talk about the possibility of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's DE_Nuke map possibly getting a redesign sometime soon, the constant stream of improvements coming to Team Fortress 2's Mannpower gamemode, and the new "Transmissions: Element 120" Half-Life 2 mod!

The prototype box for the Steam Machine project has been revealed today by The Verge. At around 12 inches long and 2.9 inches tall, the Steam Machine, shown below, is currently larger than a standard Xbox 360 but is also far smaller than the average gaming PC.
The Verge article discusses how Valve have specifically designed the Steam Machine casing to perfectly suit the components contained within it, allowing individual pieces of hardware to ventilate and breathe independently of one another. For example, the...
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, this evening heralded the start of this year's Steam Winter Sale, which is set to run from December 22nd 2015 through until January 4th 2016. Like the "Exploration" Autumn Sale from earlier this year, the Winter Sale doesn't feature Daily Deals or timed exclusives of any kind, instead just highlighting specific deals every day with no actual change or reduction in price.
This sale doesn't actually feature any kind of big gimmick or mini-game, with the only stand-out feature appearing in the form of a short comic book. Known as "Northpole Noir", the comic will expand by a single page every day, with the designs of the returning Winter Sale badge cards being steadily unveiled at the same pace....
Our Round-Up might be a...*little* late this week, but we've still got all the details on the fast-approaching release of Source 2! That isn't all we're talking about, of course, as we also bring up the beta release of Steam Broadcasting, Valve's planned appearance at GDC 2015 in March, and a whole lot more!

Well, I think this just about confirms that the files that we found, and the code inside them, were part of a secret build of Valve's next-generation engine.
A few days after we found the files, Valve has removed the entire /vproj/ directory from everybody's hard drive. But the new Hammer icons are still there, and so is valve.py - the file that briefly mentions Ep3 and Alyx.
Here's a recap of what the code in the files told us about Source 2 so far...
- Source 2 is in the making, and it's next-gen.
- Hammer is getting a big update (will include a scale tool, paint tool, several new terrain editing tools, and...
While our front page may not quite show it, this past week was packed with plenty of Valve news, including game updates for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2, which were released alongside posts by the Valve Pipeline team and the accidental reveal of an upcoming parental control mode for Steam known as "Kid Mode". For the next two Weekly News Round-Ups, assistant writer and subtitle creator Dietrich (aka Pikminiman) will be stepping in to take over from regular presenter James Rossi while he spends two weeks...
After two months of submissions, two hundred approved films, and two weeks of voting, Valve have finally announced the winners of the third annual Saxxy Awards. Virtual statues of shiny austrailium have been awarded to the very best movies in four individual categories, with a fifth awarded to the overall winner. The Saxxy awards began way back in 2011 with submissions taken primarily from the Team Fortress 2 demo recording tools. However, in 2012 entrants began making great use of the newly released Source Filmmaker, Valve's proprietary animation software. With the 2013 awards, submissions consist exclusively of videos made using the tool. And the awards go to...
Following on from the "Community Update" and the subsequent release of "Original Francis" several weeks ago, Valve have uploaded a brand new blog post to the Left 4 Dead website. As you can probably tell from the title of this article, the blog post, known as "The Gang is Getting Back Together", has announced the official release of the remaining pre-release models for Left 4 Dead's cast including earlier designs for Bill, Louis and Zoey, all of which are now available for download on the Left 4 Dead 2 Steam...
In this week's relatively light Round-Up episode, we're previewing the HTC Vive's on-going World Tour, taking a close look at one of Valve's most recent VR Game Jam events and the famous Aperture Demo, and celebrating the amazing work of long-time Valve artist Ted Backman, who sadly left the company earlier this year.

With the release of Dota 2's Source 2 development tools, the announcement of Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, the build-up to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive championship at ESL One Cologne 2014, and a whole load of game and software updates, it's been one heck of a busy week!
With so much Valve news coming thick and fast these days, don't forget to...
After months of private community testing, the "CP_Snowplow" map planned for release with the upcoming "End of the Line" update was leaked to Reddit earlier today. The map, which is heavily related to the End of the Line short created by James McVinnie, has BLU team guide a train through a map while RED team attempt to destroy it with large traps. BLU team must capture control points in a linear fashion to prevent the traps from doing damage to the train, eventually destroying it after 10 successful hits.
The map, which is being created by community mappers YM and Frozen, was recently opened up for "public" beta testing amongst the TF2Maps.net community in order to receive more gameplay feedback about balancing, progression, and flow. Unfortunately, one of the individuals invited to...
Today we're sad to announce that our site director and founder, Munro, has decided to step down from his post at ValveTime and leave the staff ranks.
Munro founded Halflife2.net back in May 2003, uniting a community of patient Half-life fans. The site grew rapidly and became the number one source for Half-life fans. Since then the site has continued to support Valve following a rebrand to ValveTime early last year.
As part of a staff restructure, I'm grateful to have been nominated as the new site director going forward. The site continues to have a great team of admins keeping all elements of the site ticking over, including Chris_D, StarMonkey, and Pi Mu Rho. We also have a fantastic team of writers and media producers working alongside them as always.
We would all like to take this opportunity to thank Dan (Munro) for all he has done since starting Halflife2.net. Everything here started with him a decade ago and here his involvement ends. We all wish him the...
Surprise! Seven years and 364 days after Half-Life 2: Episode Two was released as part of The Orange Box (a total coincidence), SteamDB has brought to light some leaked Half-Life 3 content that was released through today’s Dota 2 update.
The leak doesn’t contain any game assets, but instead it has some text files that define some game assets - similar to what Valve’s FGD does.
Of note are three files that have new information, named hl3.txt, rpg.txt, and lights.txt. We’ve gone ahead and compiled what we think are the more relevant pieces of information from these files, and that’s detailed below...

Updated: 14/05/14A full trailer has been released, revealing the gameplay and campaigns featured in Left 4 Dead: Survivors will actually appear largely the same to that of the original game. Four new exclusive characters have also been revealed, who will likely remain exclusive to this Japanese arcade port.Original Post
In this ValveTime Review, we're checking out what is likely the weirdest and most unusual mod we've ever discussed. We were intrigued to check out the "fairly casual exploration" mod, "A Minuted Millions", after the game's creator introduced it to us on our forums last month. What do we think of this absolutely ridiculous Portal 2 mod? Let's find out!
