My only phobia is actually the fear of needles, trypanophobia. Its pretty logical but comes in hella unhandy if I ever need a shot or, god forbid, have to go into the hospital for something.

One of my friends has a phobia of going up steep hills. I had never heard of it but its apparently pretty common. None of us thought too much about it until we went on a road trip last summer. We started going up this one hill and he started hyperventilating and we had to put a towel over his head and pull over. He said he has to avoid driving alot of places because of it.

I'm glad mine doesn't really effect my everyday life as much as his does. So what are your experiences with weird phobias halflife2.net?

A fear of dogs at one point when I was about 10 or something. I was attacked by a Rottweiler when I was with a friend at another friends house. It broke through like a 1/4" thick chain and went straight for me. Bit me in the butt then ran after it's owner. The next day, the owner had like a shredded jacket when she came to school. The dog was sometimes provoked by people actually throwing rocks at it. So naturally the dog didn't know my friend and I so it went berserk. After that I was scared by dogs. I just couldn't get near one, not even a Chihuahua. Its weird too because my German Shepard died a few years ago before the attack. Golden Retrievers even tried to attack me but thankfully the owner had a leash on it. Even a Rottweiler puppy tried to attack me once. So essentially I was public enemy #1 to dogs.

I started to try and conquer my fear and once I got older and taller, I figured if the dog did try and attack me, I could easily defend myself. Then I got 2 Rat Terriers a couple of years ago and they are about the size of a Chihuahua. The point is, I faced my fears and I'm over it. I still don't like needles neither. Just suck it up and take it like a man you pussy!:upstare:

I can't think of any phobias that I have. I mean snakes and spiders are icky anyway but I don't go mental when they're around. Definitely don't have a fear of needles, though my sister does which is always funny watching. Hmmm... It's a tough one. I'll get back to you.

    Scared of spiders... just... D:

Heights, I can handle... Until theres no railing or anything to stop me from falling from the edge.

Thats about all I'm scared of really. I don't mind needles putting stuff in me, but when they try to take blood out I go as white as a sheet. I'm queezy so guess I'm scared of blood too.

I don't think I have any phobias that I know of. Needles can gross my brother out. But he takes the needle like a man and doesn't panic. But about 30 seconds after that he just faints...

I feel a strange fascination with spiders, but I hate them and I wuld never touch one. Hmm... Maybe Pratchett was right about hate being a attracting force...

Spiders in particular and insects in general (Yes, spiders are not insects, but in a war they would side with the insects)- and I mean totally going mental, as in I see one and I'll jump out of my chair, run out of the room, then inch by inch make my way back into the room with the biggest book I can find, never losing eye contact with the spider (If it disappears and I cannot find it, I will never be able to use that room again ever in my life) until I am really, really, really close to it (Read; about five feet). Then, after many anxiety-filled moments of sweating, swallowing, shaking and whispering intimidating ideas to the spider, I scream at the top of my lungs and smash the disgusting little thing.
I then sit down again, suddenly feeling very manly, which it is painfully obvious I shouldn't.

So, yeah. Not a weird or uncommon phobia I suppose, but a pretty bad one.

I know someone who is afraid of mounted taxidermic heads. She won't even go into a restaurant that has one.

I am deathly afraid of cockroaches.

The only one I have is a phobia of being stuck in a tiny space for a long amount of time. Doesn't effect my life much though.

Not a phobia per se, but I have a deep deep deep hatred/fear of cockroaches and spiders. One time, I was sitting at the computer with my legs stretched out to the side and I felt this tickling sensation on my feet. Thought it was maybe a hair or something so I just wiggled my toes and looked down to see a F*CKING HUGE COCKROACH SCURRY AWAY!

    Scared the jeebus outta me.

Anything that can sting, bite, or suck my blood freaks me out. I am also kind of afraid of heights. This doesn't affect my ability to fly on a plane though.

List of things that make me run like a little girl: Bees, hornets, mosquitoes, a few spiders (I grew up with black widows), ticks, and wasps.

The only phobia I have is i'm very very very scared of heights. I can't even climb down a treehouse ladder hahaha. It's funny because my dad was a paratrooper, so we were on a roof and I was just in the middle of it cowering and he was just walking around right near the edge and looking right off it. And this roof was like 3 or 4 stories high.

I've just discovered a brilliant phobia name. Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. I can't even pronounce it. But it means a fear of the number 666.

I had a friend a long time ago who was deathly afraid of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth. I thought that was hilarious.

I get horribly anxious if I am in a tight space and unable to free myself. Also, if there is a phobia of being afraid of deep, murky bodies of water, I have it.

    I have phobiaphobia.

No seriously, I have some phobias, but I don't think they are really phobias, because they aren't irrational.

for example, I'm afraid of heights, because you can die or be badly injured if you fall from them. This kind of sucked when I was a carpenter and was asked to go up the ladder. At first, I was scared of even the medium sized ones, but I conquered that one, and feel good about that. I'm still afraid to go up or down the really high ones though.

I used to have a phobia of needles, but one hot nurse and I was able to hide it. Now I am over it. Still don't like them at all, but I just do what I have to do.

Sometimes I'm afraid while walking past a tank with explosive gas or liquid in it, I try to avoid it, thinking it could just be my luck that something makes it explode, but again, I don't really think this is irrational, because it could happen, and I don't cower or act strange, I just try not to stand next to them, etc.

I don't know, I guess I don't have any phobias, but that doesn't mean I don't fear or avoid certain things or situations.

I know this'll sound like I'm trying to be tough or something, but I honestly have no phobias except being up high, and even then it's only a slight discomfort, I mean I can stand on a building looking over a railing with no discomfort, but if I'm standing right on the edge with no railing, then my palms get sweaty and stuff.. And it also seems to be only 3 stories or higher, I have no problem climbing onto the roof of my house and such.. My dad knows a member of the skydiving club near my house, and I think I'll go for a skydive to see if I can overcome my fear, as soon as I get money. Should be fun..

I believe any severe phobias are like this. I usually ask questions like "do pictures of the thing bother you?," or "does imagining it bother you?" to test the severity of a phobia. Pictures and video are also used in gradual desensitization of severe phobias.

Yeah most of this stuff is normal... any sane person is gonna freak the **** out if they turn around and there's a tarantula on their desk or if you're really high up with nothing stopping you from falling except your balance. Same can go for sharp objects, being trapped, other gross bugs that wouldn't hesitate to poison you...

I don't think I've ever known someone with an actual phobia.

You guys are doing good naming off random phobia names that I'm too lazy to look up, but I actually intended the thread to be stories of encounters with people with weird phobias or weird things you have done because of your personal phobias.

When I went in to get my wisdom teeth taken out they had to put me on an IV and draw blood as part of hospital protocol. I was freaking out, practically seizures in the bed while nurses were trying to stick me with that goddamn needle. They had to go out and find the nurse that specialized in drawing babies blood in pediatrics and get her to use a really fine baby needle on me while I was distracted. Worst experience of my life. I want to get rid of it because it is a threat to my health and feeling that kind of anxiety over anything is just a horrible experience. I havent really taken any steps toward it though because I dont encounter it everyday and I dont really want to admit Im crazy. Im just kind of hoping it will go away I guess. Hopefully I wont have any surprise hospital visits before then.
