I started reading and then I was like "oh this is a whole thing" and skimmed through the rest and must have missed that. The last line sealed the deal for me on what I went off mostly.

Do you still watch Japanese sadomasochist rape scenario porn?

It's just acting. We could start an exclusive club around that and not invite casuals.

I assume he is refering to the fact that the sales explosion around DayZ will soon account for more than half the lifetime sales of the game.

That's a dumb way of putting it, and also there's no way of knowing how many of those sales were purely just for playing DayZ.

DayZ could have been the tipping point for people on the fence about buying arma.

Yet, in all their wisdom and lack of a nation to call their home -- Take off Helicopters! Is a common annoying direct from various official Bohemia sites.

Rocket is unfortunately enslaved, otherwise I'd be hearing echoes of Minecraft. It's HUGE at American Universities, the new game to play with all your friends to accumulate beans and roleplay as a meandering clone who can sprint like captain America yet suddenly becomes a Stephen Hawking wannabe when he fails to step, in bizzare slow motion, over a garden divide.

ArmA came a long way, but why is it still animated like shit? Their community is their saving grace. Hopefully they'll repay those of you who are so dedicated.

Sorry, but that's just ****ing stupid as hell. I don't even... If by part you mean .5% or less.

I can't believe you still defend this game like a child, it's admirable dedication but much in the way that people genuinely believe in the "Ancient Aliens" shit or believe that they're saving the planet advocating Clean Coal.

Zombies are selling ArmA 2. They're selling the **** out of it like it never has before. It took zombies -- yep, a bit of pop culture with a concept of reanimated dead which has been stealing our movies, televison and games for over five years.

ArmA 2 is less relevant than the Zombie child it had. Deal with it.

You think 0.5% or less people who bought Arma for DayZ are ever going to play anything but DayZ?

And stop talking about the series like you know anything, at all. It's getting really annoying. You've repeatedly shown your disinterest in the way the game works, and you don't have an audience here to listen to your bullshit.

Zombies sell. Yes, I think less than .5% will ever touch vanilla ArmA, and if they do they'll do it out of boredom on their own and realize the game is not fun playing alone. They're paying to play a zombie theme park. The game wasn't so much as whispered about by non forum goer types until DayZ.

It's fine, the face of the Quake/GldSrc stuff is now CoD. Why do you care if it gives your beloved BiS more money to make games with no QA?

Bohemia is unapproachable and rocket stuck zombies in and stripped objectives. Then shit got fun for people in suburbia or collegiate atmospheres who literally shit disposable income and live vicariously through zombie fantasies. That and it's fun.

Bohemia is good at making the bare bones, editing tools and authentic assets. But god damn are they bad at capturing a fan base beyond what is the forthcoming generation of war simulation. In a chair.

Zombies, dude. Zombies are free money and Rocket had a stroke, perhaps a literal one, and appealed to the masses with a technology used for pseudo-simulation of actual warfare.

You think the public at large knows the technology and core gameplay that stands behind Left 4 Dead?

Opportunism, it was genius. I'm actually talking to you, I'd take it to PMs now that you're getting angry -- but I somehow think that would be a bad idea. Gonna play myself some CoD because I got tired of DayZ. Where the guns at, yo?

I told you once. You need to stop talking about shit when you haven't a clue.

You do not know the games, or the developer. Please shut up.

What do you know about Arma's fanbase? Do you browse arma forums and community sites? Do you play with them? How about the previous games, too?

You know Badhat, Sliver, and Morgs at least, don't you? You should know that they are not war simulator armchair generals. Sliver couldn't even give a shit about guns and makes fun of us for knowing what an MK48 is.

News flash you ****ing insufferable cock. The game is fun because it's something vastly different than everything that's out there, and what people think they want in a game. The game is a cult success because people who are seeking a truly genuine teamplay and immersive experience are finding what they need in Arma. Nobody gives a shit that the vaulting animation is slow. You couldn't even vault in the previous games without ACE mod.

The game wasn't designed to be what rocket is trying to do, but it certainly was close enough. BIS is making usability a high priority for Arma 3, but this was before DayZ even came about. The series has been growing steadily as more mods, islands, and missions have come out. I'm not going to pretend to understand why BIS made the choices they did, because it doesn't really matter to me. I enjoy the games and accept the flaws. I'm going to be eager to test and provide feedback for the arma 3 alpha coming next month, so that it yet again becomes the best game in the series, improving upon everything they learned from how players and modders played and modified their previous games.

I don't know the games -- how is that topical? The press, sales figures and gaming communities speak louder than myself with twice the passion. They'll communicate far better than myself, you're being so melodramatic with your vehement and righteous defense of a product that has shaped you. Cool, but you are objectively living in a bubble. Your precious war-humping mil-sim marriage is having a very public love affair with a bean collecting simulator.

Arguing with people who deny fact is boring on this level, I'd sooner regular reddit's notorious /r/atheism and repeat every story I ever had about being approached by a Ladder Day Saint or Jehovah's Witness.

You debate fact and turn your anger towards me despite a past of taking the higher ground. Go ahead and dig deeper, set up those sand bags and set up a mortar. Just make sure you have a nutritious hydrating Coca-Cola as your spotter. With that I bid you adieu in hopes that you appear the more reasonable person. You deserve to be right.

Every time my opinion of BHC starts to taper its decline, he does something like this and my respect for him or his opinions resumes its total freefall. Like, he's getting damn close to VirusType2 or Dragon Shirt's level of completely worthless opinions.

EDIT: And yes, I realize that I posted this as if BHC wasn't even in this thread, instead of talking directly to him. Thats just how it happened.

Because you keep making these statements about the game that are completely based on your incredibly warped perception of what the game is and why people play it:

"Bohemia is good at making the bare bones, editing tools and authentic assets. But god damn are they bad at capturing a fan base beyond what is the forthcoming generation of war simulation. In a chair."

I wasn't being melodramatic when I told you to stop talking shit about a game you know nothing about. You kept doing it. Surely you can see how annoying you sound?

What in the shit are you talking about? It's like you're responding to a different person or something. What does this have anything to do with what we're talking about?

This is almost like that one thread with Eejit all over again. We keep telling him that he doesn't know what he's talking about, and we explain why. But he just refuses to listen, and clings stubbornly to how he prefers to view us.

BHC: You have proven time and time again that you do not understand Arma 2 or why people like us play and enjoy it. I told you to shut up about it to give you a chance to do so before I tore into you. I have given you direct evidence that contradicts your retarded 'lol milsimmers' view of what the player base consists of. I've tried to explain what makes the game great, and why your criticisms of the game are completely pointless, and only reinforce the fact that you do not know a damn thing. You were complaining about the speed of the vaulting animation. Is that really all you can come up with?

I think maybe BHC doesn't understand my opinion of DayZ and its popularity. This is especially amusing because I have no idea where he got this impression.

So let me explain it, if you're still reading:

I liked DayZ from the first time I saw a youtube clip of it. It makes great use of the open sandboxy nature of arma, as well as almost every other feature that makes arma different than other FPS games. It's a good fit. Melee is probably the only major weakpoint as far as mismatching of zombies + arma.

I like, too, that DayZ is incredibly popular. For several reasons:

    1. It demonstrates that modding is a good thing, and hopefully other developers will take note
    2. Shows that gameplay does not need to be fast paced and full of action to keep people fully engaged, immersed, and terrified
    3. More people for me to hunt

The things I don't like are the way some people choose to play the game. There is a very fine line between this and the simple fact that dayz is popular. Maybe some of these things I don't like will be eradicated as development continues. I dunno. I'm happy as is, because these are not things that break the game. Not even close. They're just peeves of mine.

    And another thing.

The reason I get worked up when you say things about the game and the developer is because I take offense to your impression of it. Arma is a misunderstood game as it is. Ask anyone who was iffy about it, and then finally played it with us and saw what it was like. Milsimming is one thing you can do in arma. Heck, Day of Defeat had tons of milsimming. Does that mean DoD is only for milsimmers? Our Valvetime player base is certainly not a band of milsimmers. We enjoy the game for the things I've mentioned countless times over the past few years.

Your constant mention of me or any other player being a "war-humping milsimmer" only perpetuates this incredibly ****ing stupid notion. On top of that, you criticize BIS based on this warped perception that you have of the game. That is why I take offense.

I don't care if the new players give a crap about base ARMA or not. Any cash being pumped into Bohemia and the RV Engine can only be a good thing in my book. The players who love ARMA will continue to do so, and there is absolutely no reason why the popularity of DayZ should have an adverse effect on anything.

I hope some day the broader gaming community can accept the existence of niche genres that may not necessarily interest them. As it is always sad when every single developer and game is expected to have the same mass appeal every time or be considered some giant failure.

ARMA isn't for everyone.. BUT THAT'S COMPLETELY OKAY.

This is actually true, at least for me - the game isn't very fun alone. Good thing there are plenty of non-Day Z servers and communities out there.

I've played quite a bit of this game but I get the feeling that it would be a lot more satisfying if playing with others. I'm currently getting more entertainment from watching lets play videos of it on youtube for some reason =P

Turns out if your playing solo its a lot more fun putting your self in dangerous situations then it is going the cautious survival route. For instance sneaking into a super market and barely surviving a pvp fight with another player only to be stormed by zombies. And Surving that only to be shot in the back by a friend of the dead pvp player. All in the span of 8 minutes. Felt like a scene from a movie especially since your avatar starts to panic and have the kind of reaction you'd expect in real life.

BTW not that any one cares but I crawled my way to a hospital and loaded up on morphine. Also apparently some servers are bugged and they appear to insta kill you upon connection, except that they don't. Upon connecting to a different server you spawn at the shore of chenarus retaining all your items.

Great news! Would be awesome if they are using the same engine as they are for ARMA 3. Will be watching out for this one as I have yet to play DayZ but would love to get into it.

It was only a matter of time that this mod would go stand alone, based on how frigging famous it has now become.

It is easily the best zombie game around, and ironically, it's hardly about the zombies. They're easily dodged and are more of a nuisance than a threat, yet they can still get you killed if you climb a ladder and cant go anywhere when you're on top.

But the real draw for me in this game, and what keeps me coming back, is how close to a zombie apocalypse this really is; it shows the true nature of humanity.

This game is more about the people playing it than the zombies in it. It's about survival. It's about forming packs and defending yourselves, more so than L4D, it feels more personal somehow. You're more vulnerable. 1 hit is all it take to break a leg or knock you unconscious.

Unfortunately your experience is quite based on the amount of people on the server, and knowing that pulls you away from the immersion. That aside though, approaching a barn in the middle of no-where suddenly becomes the most intense, scary thing in gaming when you know there are 39 other people on the server. Took me literally 20 minutes the other day to approach a barn surrounded by woodland, simply because barns are a great source of loot, are relatively highly sought after especially for beginners, but because I was scanning the surroundings for any movement. Any sounds. Binos up, constantly watching, waiting. Crawl forward, stop, look, listen. Crawl forward. Rinse and repeat. All for some empty cans...GRRRRRRR this is like Diablo!

I've never felt so tense playing a game. Adrenaline rush when you kill someone by flanking them. Hiding in a bush as a group of rebels hunt around for you. The thrill of your every move potentially being watched by numerous scopes and binoculars. You're being surrounded, they're setting up a cross fire to catch you in using teamspeak....and you don't even know it until you drop.

But what I really love, is how people act in this game. It's amazing how many stories, already, that you can read about betrayal, joy, sadness, helplessness and triumph. Ambushes, being taken hostage, killed by a random sniper, tense moments where you run into each other in a hall aiming at each other, slowly backing away.

    People. Are. Cruel.

Meeting someone, calling out you're friendly. Working with him for days. Having fun. Chatting. Surviving together. Then one night, you get a bullet in the back of the head.

All for a tin of beans.

And the only thing that kind of annoys me, is that you lose EVERYTHING when you die. Most of the time it's due to other players, but sometimes you die from glitches. I for one had my gillie suit and M4a1 lost due to climbing some random lookout tower in the woods, but glitched when I got to the top and fell to the floor, a good 20ft. Broken leg(s). Had to crawl to a random village, took me 30 minutes, as I had no means of healing myself, and died after attracting a few zombies. Eaten. All because of a glitch. But hey, it's Alpha!

You want to see how sick people are? Play this game. It's uncanny. And it scares the shit out of me.

As Veg mentioned in chat earlier, this wouldn't exactly be a good thing. The Arma 3 engine isn't going to be built with many of the DayZ mechanics in mind, such as zombie AI, survival stats etc...

I think DayZ would benefit from the basic frame of Arma 3's engine, with more refinements to suit the DayZ game play.

Well yeah, I know ARMA 3's engine wasn't built with DayZs mechanics in mind, but neither was the old engine. I won't pretend that I know for sure that the transition process to a new engine will be easy, but at the very least Rocket is now working alongside the people who designed the engine which I imagine would help a lot. And as you said, the engine likely opens up new doors for DayZ that weren't possible with ARMA 2's engine.

With an engine being developed based on the needs of DayZ, (or most likely a heavily modified version of Arma 3's engine), they'll be able to make performance feature trade-offs. For example, DayZ doesn't really need the large view distance that Arma 3 has, so hopefully we'll see something like dynamic shadows since there is some room freed up in the rendering performance department.
