for some reason steam insist on using internet explorer for browsing the store etc etc. this causes problems as for some reason it won't remember the correct version number for the flash player or something(have to download and install again and again), causing the whole steam store to lock up at various points...and it's annoying the **** out of me...any way to change it so steam uses firefox instead?

I went looking in the Steam registry files and found some shit about Steam P2P. I was like "oohhh I found some upcoming feature nobody knows about hoho" so I googled it and sure enough people had discovered it before me.

But still, I found it by myself.

There's a lot of interesting stuff in thar.

Edit: Wait, the news article I found is dated 2006... Wtf? Is there already a P2P thing in Steam I don't know about? Or what?

    Nothing that answers your question...

But it's relevant in that I was looking for a way to change the browser Steam uses by looking in the registry. I found some interesting things as mentioned in my post so I thought I'd include it.

    SUE ME.

I ACTUALLY TRIED TO HELP, JERK.

I'm pretty sure you can't. There's always someone asking about it on the Steampowered forums and the answers tend to be no.

so wait...is having internet explorer installed actually a minimum req for running steam?

what if I was to un-install internet explorer?(I probably won't since I use it every know and then if firefox has a cock-up with a website(rare))

Bram Cohen, the inventor of BitTorrent worked at Valve for like a year in 2003-2004 which is when the original rumor started.

Not sure if Steam does P2P downloading right now though. I think it's set up as you found, but Valve decides not to use it for whatever reason. Or maybe it is, and it's just totally transparent to us.

I'd assume it's used for updating games and/or downloading them. That way the speed is increased. Like Blizzards WoW patch thingie.

I think having IE installed comes under having a Windows OS because IE comes with Windows by default and there's no way to uninstall it (unless you do it manually, which probably isn't a good idea).

If you didn't have IE installed, Steam just wouldn't be able to use IE required features. Like News, and Store, and Steam Communities.
