Three years after the release of the original Half-Life and two years after the release of Half-Life: Opposing Force, comes Half-Life: Blue Shift. Yet another visit back to the events of the Black Mesa Research Facility but this time you are filling the shoes of one of the security team at Black Mesa, Barney Calhoun.

Remember the security guard knocking on the door near the start of Gordon's tram ride in Half-Life? That is indeed Barney Calhoun, trying to get to work where he is then instructed to work on a malfunctioning elevator. Unfortunately this coincides with Gordon's experiment resulting in a resonance cascade.

Barney meets up with Dr Rosenberg and the two team up in an effort to escape from Black Mesa by way of teleport. The journey even takes Barney to the borderworld, Xen. Upon his return he helps Rosenberg by finding a new power cell for the teleporter and therefore instruments their escape from the facility.

Blue Shift was released to generally less favourable reviews than its predecessor. With so many years passing since the original not even the High Definition Pack, which included double polygon versions of many original models, was enough to make the game feel "up to date".
