The Official "Oh God Something is Broken" Thread

Good morning,

As we go forward with the ValveTime.net launch (somewhat behind schedule), it's possible that you see some glitches or mistakes on my part throughout today. I hope that these are at a minimum, but I am probably not that lucky.

Please use this thread to bring attention to things that I may have missed. Whenever possible, please use screenshots that you've taken of the problem, and please be sure to include what browser you are using, so that I may better replicate the error, and thus be more able to solve it, and quickly at that.

By our powers combined, we'll make this place livable yet!

New Forum Smilies

I don't expect everyone will like what we've done, but basically we have changed a few things with regards to smilies:

1) You may now notice that there is a little "Smilies" tab underneath the text editor. This is an alternative interface for picking smilies. Right now you will only see one section, but ultimately what we can do is have different categories of smilies that we can scroll through.

2) We now have A LOT more smilies than we used to. Here's a few of my favourites. Asshat: Poop:

3) All of the original smilies have been replaced but if there are any specific ones you would like to have re-added, these can be considered if you request them here.

Thank you

Community Feedback: Steam profile badges

Unless you're deaf, dumb and/or blind, you will notice that most people have Steam Profile badges next to each post.

These are created when you fill in the relevant profile field with the last portion of your Steam Community URL.

We plan to keep the Steam Profile badges, but it is long overdue an update. And one gripe we have is that page loads are quite a bit longer - especially as we have 40 posts per page.

A new version is available which should improve the page loads quite a bit but, the steam profile information is collected in a completely different way.

Instead of being a profile field, actually it is done by linking your forum account to Steam. This involves clicking what will be a brand new "Sign in with Steam" button. This uses OpenID to associate your forum account to Steam. At that point, your Steam ID is collected and stored in the database and it will be that which makes your profile display.

We will also have available a new page that will contain Steam stats such as games owned, hours played etc. plus the opportunity to get more statistics in the future.

I am telling you this because if we do this, your current steam profile badges will disappear and you will be required to sign in with steam to make them display again.

If you have a major issue, please let us discuss it here. If you don't then we plan to make this change over the next few days.

The WYSIWYG Editor / Text Box

Ok.

So I don't dislike the Rich Text / WYSIWYG editor. But we're pretty stuck with it as it is the default editor. Of course it could be changed with an add on etc. but we have to wait for one to be created first.

Oh, and that's happened

Here's a demo video of it:

I think it does answer some of the issues that were raised, but before we buy it (YES, BUY IT! €15 TO TREAT YOU GUYS TO A NEW EDITOR EVEN THOUGH YOU ALL BLOCK OUR ADS AND WE CAN'T EVEN AFFORD OUR SERVER BILL) we thought we should see what you think.

The plan is for us to replace the plain text editor so we hopefully get the best of both worlds.

EDIT: You will see some shots of the admin tools to customise it - obviously that isn't relevant to you guys.

New Hosts

You will notice that we changed to a new host yesterday. We (well, StarMonkey) completed the move in just under two hours.

The main prompt for doing so was to ensure we're on a much more stable and reliable host.

We are now hosted by Nimbus Hosting. They specialise in hosting forums and other platforms and have an amazing reputation.

Special thanks goes to Tim at Nimbus Hosting plus an extra special thanks to StarMonkey for getting stuff set up.

The new server is using nginx rather than Apache and MariaDB rather than MySQL. All of this adds up to a nice and quick experience. If you couple that with APC and memcached, overall you should have a much nicer time browsing the site.

How is it for you so far? Quicker? Slower? Same? Let us know

Collapsible Quotes. Like it?

Hey guys,

By the request of some community members over at the Official XenForo forums I created an add-on to XenForo which basically collapses quotes over a certain length automatically.

I've enabled this, but I just want to see whether you would like it to stay enabled or whether you don't much care for it.

Krynn72
I'm going to be switching carriers soon (again) and have to decide what kind of phone to get. There's two phones I'm currently teetering on, and thats the HTC Sensation 4G and the HTC Radar 4G. The Sensation will have Android 4.0 available to it by the time I'd be getting it, and the Radar is the Windows Phone OS. I can get the Sensation for $50, and the Radar for free with my contract. However the cost factor is negligible as I can get the Sensation from Best Buy, for which I have gift certificates which can bring the price down to like ten bones.

Currently I have the Incredible, which is a pretty good phone. The Android OS is feeling pretty tired now, and I love the way the Windows Phone interface is set up and how it works. However I dont want to hamstring myself in terms of capabilities. Lots of the videos I watch about the Windows Phone OS harp on and on about stupid shit like the social networking crap and how it links up with Xbox Live. I dont use my phone for that crap.

Its a phone primarily, and the extra functions are more... I guess you could call it "buisiness related". Things like GPS, calendar shit, email, taking photos that need to be detailed, video calls, taking notes and setting reminders, etc. Messaging is the most important thing for me though, and the default android messaging system (at least in 2.3) was crap. Complete crap. GoSMS is leagues better, but still not as good as I suspect it could be. I think Google Drive could have some sweet features once Google fixes their TOS.

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with WP or Android 4.0, and can give me their impressions on those aspects, so I can better decide when the time comes. Thanks in advance.
As you can see, that is a long quote. There is a link in the top right to read more. When you click it, the full quote is revealed.

Shall we keep it? Or turn it off?

New Site Feature: My Attachments

I often can't believe it when I say this... but some of us have been here for 9 whole years and over that time as well as our posts that I often read through for nostalgia, we also might just have uploaded the odd file or two.

This could be an image you created, or something you've written, something you stole from another website - whatever. But I'm certain that if you could easily go back through all of your attachments you'd find some gems in there.

Well, now you can easily go back through all your attachments: http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/mine

The My Attachments section is a record of all the attachments that you've uploaded since you started using your account.

Have a flick through there's some gems, I'm sure.

Here's the first ever attachment I uploaded...

vBulletin vs. XenForo

Firstly I have to stress: This is not about whether you like Halflife2.net vs ValveTime.net.

I just have a personal interest in hearing your opinions on the forum software we're now using. Of course for many years we used vBulletin 2.x, 3.x and 4.x before recently changing to XenForo.

XenForo is pretty new. You may not have used it before. You may be much more used to the user experience of vBulletin and others. But have we made the right decision?

Again: This is not about whether you like Halflife2.net vs ValveTime.net. Not about whether you like how it looks or colour schemes. This is purely about the functionality of the two pieces of software.

Just choose your answer in the poll.

New Site Feature: Log in or Sign up with Facebook / Twitter / Google / Steam

View attachment 23295

This is actually, strictly speaking, not a new feature. At least, you have always been able to associate your account or register a new one merely by logging in with Facebook, Twitter or Steam.

A new addition, however, is logging in with Google. And it's now even easier to associate your social accounts with your forum accounts via your user drop down:

View attachment 23296

There's no particular benefit to this other than to make it easier to login or sign up. Oh, and the buttons look pretty.

But it's there, and will help you and others login, even if you can't remember your Forum password.

Just to clarify, your login details are not shared with us. We do not see any of your passwords for these services. Nor would we want to. We all know the kinds of stuff Vegeta897 keeps on Facebook...

index.php is in the URL of every page. You can probably use .htaccess to rewrite URLs properly (if your framework supports it).

HTML links in the quick reply box could use their own CSS color. Currently it's just light gray on a white background.

Spoiler tags in some signatures don't expand properly. Like they're at a fixed height. Not sure if this is on purpose.

On this one post that I am too lazy to look up, the width of all the text was squished smaller. Like how the old forum used to **** up randomly.

More to come later...?

Quote Rotator Logic Error

The quote rotation script at the top of the page has a logic error, making it so the first and last entries in the array come up less often than the rest.

This part right here:
var whichQuotation=Math.round(Math.random()*(Q-1));

It uses Math.round, which just rounds to the nearest integer. This works, but the first entry in the array only comes up if the generated number is between 0 and 0.5. That's a range of only 0.5. The second entry in the array comes up if the generated number is between 0.5 and 1.5, a range of 1. Now, the last entry only comes up if the number generated is between 2.5 and 3, making the range 0.5 again.

Here is corrected code:
var whichQuotation=Math.floor(Math.random()*(Q));

It looks similar, but uses Math.floor instead, so it only rounds down. So everything between 0 and 1 becomes 0, everything between 1 and 2 becomes 1, and so on. This makes it so all the entries have the same chance of showing up.

Poll #2 About our Rating System

Ok, thank you for voting on our previous poll regarding the post likes system.
We had 10 votes saying there should not be a rating system at all, compared to 19 who voted one of the other three options.
So, on the basis of these results, we will be keeping the rating system in some form.

However, I'm yet to decide what that should look like as there are still conflicting ideas as to what would work best.

I think it's also fair to allow anyone who previously said no to the system to now tell us if a like system will remain on the site, what form it should take. Therefore, the poll options are nearly identical...
