Petition for an ultra-lightweight alternate Steam client

I would like a version of Steam that I could load, when I wanted to, as an alternate to the main Steam client (on PC/Mac/Linux). This version would support game launching and possibly game maintenance, only.

Since the only thing we "own" via Steam are licenses to execute the games we have purchased, it would be nice to be able to get to that functionality without a lot of other encumbrance, when we so desire.

For times one wants the full Steam experience, just load that client, instead.

Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

Day of Defeat wont load: "HL.exe abnormal termination"

Since the end of February, I haven't been able to get Day of Defeat to load. I have tried reinstalling and clearing out all the cache files, but nothing works.

I'm playing the Valve version of Day of Defeat. Nothing on my computer has changed recently (except maybe for those endless f-ing Java updates). I was able to play just fine last month.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Is it a known issue of some kind?

How would you remove the "bottleneck" greenlight is?

Hey everyone!

If you've watched the Gabe's presentation on DICE[1] you're probably talking about his wishes to produce a HL/Portal movie with JJ Abrams but I personally don't nurture very strong feelings for that as this kinds of movies usually fail (I know Gabe Newell is different and Valve isn't Konami, but still).

Anyway, what really caught my attention (as you might deduce from the title) is Valve's plans to open up the Steam store to every developer and game. Specifically how he described Steam as a bottleneck (and later even as a dictatorship[2]) implying the greenlight system is broken and needs to be removed (so soon after it launched nonetheless).

I would like everyone interested in this topic to jump in the discussion and give your interpretation on how this should be handled. Why? Because if it's not done well enough it risks Steam becoming a shovelware store full of mindless puzzle games, pay-to-win social "experiences" and amateurish clones of successful games. Like the app stores of smartphones.

Not to mention a petri dish of every kind of virus, worm, keylogger and phishing scam known to humanity!

This could hurt usability of the Steam store (spending a good half-hour trying to find a specific game) ruining its reputation and credibility and therefore the amazing system we all know and love.

I have my own ideas (obviously) but I'm interested in yours.

Thanks for reading! =)

Source Games Basically Unplayable

Hey all,

Ever since buying a laptop for myself (May '11) I have been having an issue with playing any online source game. I have a Samsung QX410-S02 which is perfectly capable of running more intense games than CS: S, TF2, or L4D1/2. I have played COD4, BLOPS, BF: BC2, SWTOR, EQ2, D3, Guild Wars 2, etc running fine. The issue is that every 30 seconds to a minute, I will skip 3-4 times in a few seconds, making it impossible to do well in Valve's online shooters.

I have tried running the game just the intel graphics card, and just the Nvidia (through Optimus controls) and no change. Running hl2.exe in admin, Windows XP SP2/3 also has no effect. I even tried dual booting with Windows 8, same issue. Unfortunately cannot try XP on this machine as I have issues finding drivers for my HDD. I'm out of luck, been searching like crazy for a year now and cannot find anything to fix this. Any, and I mean any help is appreciated! Let me know if you need more information.

Video of the skipping in multiple games:

Steam cloud sync error

My patience is beginning to wear thin with Steam at the moment. After years of no problems, I'm being plagued with them now!

I logged in to Steam a few minutes ago and all my categories had vanished, with all games in my library in one big list again. I tried to run up a game and got the 'Steam was unable to sync your files for *** with the Steam Cloud'.

I rebooted, and my categories are all back, but i'm still getting the Steam Cloud sync error. Anyone else getting this?

Steam Crashing problems.

Ok, for several weeks I've been mostly playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas. In the last 3 or 4 weeks I have been having a lot of stability issues, with both games crashing several times an hour. Sometimes I could have 3 or 4 crashes in 10 minutes! I just figured it was Fallout doing its norm of being a bit flakey sometimes, or GFWL being arsey as usual.

Last week I started noticing it with other games. Binding of Isaac. TF2. Arkham Asylum. MW3 (when it was free to play last week). Lost Planet. Then I got War for Cybertron in the daily sale and ... booom.... 15 mins of play, CRASH.... exactly the same as the others.

Is there any way of verifying the actual Steam Client, in the same way as you can with individual games when they start bugging out? Should I remove and reinstall Steam? All the games seem to be verifying fine. Or maybe its my ageing computer?

This is driving me mental as some games are becoming unplayable.

Hello all. I have spent some time looking around the web and found it hard to locate new maps in a centralised location so here is a thread to add links to new maps for DOD Source.

I am mapping right now and have placed some on a few websites to get the thread started, although it took some time to find sites and even then the maps I added were the first in a few years! Come on DODers - make some more maps and upload them.
DOD maps are varied from WW2 type | Fun type | Orange type | etc.

Steam grouping of friends.

Your playing Killing Floor and you find a great player to play with so you add him. You also play Eve Online and have a few friends on Steam. You also have a few friends from this site as well. I think you get the point but by the end you have a bunch of people on your friends list and your like "who is that person"? It gets worse when they change their names constantly as well with avatar. Wouldn't it be great to add friends and group them into categories like x-fire? Well now you finally can do that if you enable the beta version of Steam: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2052495
-Fixed a case where Steam Guard would unnecessarily re-ask for activation in the Steam Client.

Guide: Simplest Way to Make a Half-Life Deathmatch:Source Dedicated Server

This is the simplest and easiest way to set up a dedicated server for Half-Life Deathmatch:Source.

Note: You Must Own Half-Life Source/Half Life Deathmatch:Source to do this.

1. Download Source Dedicated Server - If you do not already have this on steam, go and download it. It is free and is in the tools section of your main steam window.

2. Go and download GCFScape - Download just the installer here.

3. Extract the GCFs - Extract all the files from the GCF files half-life source.gcf and half life deathmatch source.gcf, which are located here: C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/
Extract these files into the following folder: C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/YOURUSERNAME/source dedicated server/

Note: If you have a 64 bit operating system like I do, then "Program Files" will be "Program Files (x86)" because Steam is a 32 bit application.

4. Launch Your Server: Go to your steam main window and go to the tools section. Click on Source Dedicated Server, which you should of installed earlier, and wait for it to load. Select under the "game" menu "HALF-LIFE: Deathmatch". Then choose your map and other server options and, finally, launch your server!

It's that simple!

Any questions just reply to this topic.
