The other thread is full of spoilers. Let's keep that one for people who have read A Song of Ice and Fire.

So how'll everyone be watching the show? I'll either been watching it on Sky on my own or with a friend off his PC. Can't wait to see how everything looks in full instead of just in trailers. Also looking forward to seeing how everyone pulls off the characters. Especially Viserys. That guy was great in Doctor Who.

Music: Rate and Discuss

We are rejuvenating the “Rate and Discuss” threads, with the intent of generating discussion and debate, in regard to your recent watch, playthrough, or read. For the music forum, this could be the last gig you attended or the latest albums you have been listening to. As a prerequisite of posting in this thread, you must expand upon your rating with, at the very least, a brief paragraph as to why you delegated it said rating. You must discuss, analyse, and critique – “I liked it” is not sufficient, and any posts that do not meet this criteria will be deleted.

There can, of course, be discussion and argument - but in the same way that "I liked it" does not constitute a post, neither does - and it pains me to say this - "You're stupid, shut up" though some of you clearly are.

An example of a suitable post:

kupocake
Pinocchio - 4/5
With the Disney movies, it takes me a while to work out whether I've seen them before in my childhood. I'm still none the wiser here, since I'm pretty sure I would have repressed memories of seeing this if I was a child... but then, as an adult there's a whole extra dimension of sinister to it. Some of it's probably not intentional (why does Gepetto want a real boy in his house anyway, huh?) but some of it must be (the coachman who takes young boys to pleasure island, and they 'don't come back as boys'?!), and it's just generally as far from a stereotype of Disney as simple, tedious good versus evil as you're likely to find.
Anyone who has problem with this, I suggest you pm me; your post will only be deleted here.

All jokes aside, what is/are your favorite musical band(s)?

Most of the songs I listen to are one or two songs from ton of different bands and artists. From Aerosmith to Woodkid. The only band I really listen to is Gorillaz.
Gorillaz is unique in two ways. The first is that their songs are good. The second is that the band is completely virtual.
The band only has one consistent real-life band member, and 4 cartoon characters, whose stories are told in the group's music videos.
Gorillaz mixes pop, hip-hop, rap, and electronica in their songs.
Anyway, I won't keep rambling on about it when you can just listen to them yourself.
I recommend "Feel Good Inc.", "Dare", and "Stylo"

And now, I must know, what's your favorite band or artist?

I am on the last episode right now. Haven't watched the movie yet.

I have a question though. Why is this show touted to be so great? I mean it's an alright show. It's a feel good show, but I feel that it lacks a certain depth and feel and quality of writing to be as truly great as people claim it to be.

I used to not even like the idea of Battlestar Galactica... but once I watched that show I really got into it and I enjoyed it immensely. I can't say that Firefly rates anywhere near BSG.

It feels quite campy, and more like a sitcom than like a well oiled masterpiece.
Now, before anyone does a quick google search and hands me the results... this is something I've been looking for for some time and it's pissing me right off that I can't find it. I've checked several lyric sites and search engines using loads of variations.

Here are a few parameters and details that might help, since I seem to be a completely useless tool and incapable of searching properly.

It is around 15 years old. I have memories of it from around then.
I don't know the name of the band, but the track was by indie/rock band.
The vocalist was male.
Can't be sure where they were from, but I think it may have been from the US.
As well as the 'Stop the world' line, there was another line something like 'got a one way ticket'. And possibly something about a rail track or bus stop... possibly... it was a long time ago!

Anyways, the longer I look for this damn thing the more I'm beginning to think it may have been a small time band that had a short life, or only played local gigs without a mainstream release.

This has been annoying me for years now, and I started looking again cos I have the damn tune stuck in my head!

Zero Dark Thirty

...I really don't know what the hell to think about this one. It was more of a biopic about a crazy red-haired woman on an obsessive goal that she was willing to forgo morals to achieve. Of course the grand message here is that it was quite literally crazy the amount of money, manpower and emotional investment the United States as a nation put into finding one man.

I do understand, however, the uneducated seeing it as anti-arab or anti-muslim. I also understand folks saying it's ham-fisted or heavy handed in it's CRITICISM of the United States. I fit more into the later camp. I feel it's not subtle about that at all.

The movie quite objectively does not advocate torture or racism, as some would have you believe about in their blogs. There are some mildly offensive lingual and cultural inconsistencies in regards to Pakistani culture but it stops there.

The film takes a full stop in being a criticism of the United States, and takes an equally drastic stop at being a pro-American pep rally. That leaves us with what the movie does right: making an interesting talking point and giving us an animated character. I'm just not sure the intelligence chase was all that enthralling. I found myself twirling my straw wrapper from time to time and almost laughing at how personal they made every Al-Qaeda based attack seem to the central characters.

As a biopic of a troubled and complex woman, and as an action film for the final ~30minutes or so the film certainly succeeds, otherwise it's a bit of a controversial yet often intriguing mess. What are your thoughts?

Les Misérables

Saw it last night and it's a bloody fantastic show. Pretty much as I remember the stage musical being though obviously they can do bigger things on set than on stage and I do think being in front of actual people performing and gazing down at them rather than have a camera jump about helped a elicit a bit more emotion than the cinema produced.

I do especially love the parts where people are singing different songs at the same time, Valjean and Javert's sort of fight particularly. Hathaway's I Dreamed a Dream also blew me away. Bloody fantastic.

Incidentally there was a surprising number of young fellas at the cinema. I thought they must have been there to go see Django Unchained but they followed us into Les Mis and were sitting behind us. They liked it too.

Mars Volta disband in signature flamboyant style

http://www.nme.com/news/the-mars-volta/68335

Revealing all in a long official statement, Bixler-Zavala vents his anger at Rodriguez-Lopez for not wanting to tour their latest album, asking; "Am I supposed to do be some progressive house wife that’s cool with watching their partner go **** other bands?"

Bixler-Zavala's statement reads:

"Thank u 2 all Volta fans you deserved more especially after the way you rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going. But Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of. We could never had done it with out you. My dream was to get us to the point were Jon Theodore and Ikey Owens came back but sadly it’s over. Thank you a million times over for ever giving a **** about our band.

For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to. All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that Mars Volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast. Thank you again. I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because a hiatus is just an insult to the fans. To all our fans all over the world thank you for giving a ****. You all ruled! I don’t think ill ever hear a fist full of dollars the same. My record will see the light of day soon and I’m excited because it sounds nothing like my previous endeavors. And no I’m not joking about any of this, I owe it 2 you guys to all fans to be serious about this."

"Thank you to all past members who helped Volta along as well. We blasted through like a comet and left our mark! If you ever see me in person and want to know why I’ll tell u my story. Please just be happy that it happened at all remember all the opposition we were met with for just starting a new band back in 2001."

"And for the record I’m still in love with At the Drive-In. Proof was in my performance. I would never get on stage if my heart was else where. I have cancelled shows before for knowing full well that my heart was not in it at that moment. Why? Because its an insult to the audience. To be clear I’m not angry I just wanted to be honest with the people who have allowed me to make a living playing music. What am I suppose to do be some progressive house wife that’s cool with watching their partner go **** other bands? We owe it 2 fans to tour."

The Amazing Spider-Man 700 - your friendly neighbourhood death threats

So in case you haven't heard the 26th December will see the end of Peter Parker's run as Spiderman with issue 700. Superior Spider-man will be the new series. Previous speculation, hints [red herrings?] suggested that another timeline/alternate universe spidey would be filling his shoes with Parker retiring.

However the comic was recently leaked, and the actual replacement is creating an internet nerd-rage singularity such that the author has been receiving death threats (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=42731) and hurt butts eclipsing the "One More Day" incident.

Good times.

Personally I'm ok with #700 and am very interested to see what'll happen in the Superior series.

In case you're curious but CBA googling - MASSIVE SPOILERS I'M SERIOUS:
As Doc Park lies dying the residual link between their brains shows SpiderOck Peter's life flashing before his eyes, with Otto superimposed over Parker.
Otto Octavius is changed by seeing the crucial moments' in Parker's life and Peter's assertion that he would do it all over again, and decides to become the hero he is replacing - but even better... Superior.

Mark Wahlberg has been confirmed as the new lead in Michael Bay's fourth and final Transformers movie. Bay announced on his website that the star of Boogie Nights and The Departed had been given the role following a successful stint on his bodybuilding-themed action comedy Pain & Gain.

Wahlberg replaces Shia LaBeouf, who starred in the first three Transformers films but made the decision to step away from the series following 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon. LaBeouf described the third film as "crap" and the experience of working within the studio system as like having executives "stick a finger up your ass".
now all they have to do is fire Bay and make the movie into something other than the Transformers which has always been a pretty stupid premise to begin with

Deus Ex film adaptation in development

http://www.geeksofdoom.com/2012/11/...nister-duo-scott-derrickson-c-robert-cargill/

We found out in July that CBS Films was developing a movie based on the hit Eidos and Square Enix video game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Now comes word that the studio has brought in the team behind the recent horror movie hit Sinister to bring the movie to life. Scott Derrickson will direct, as well as write the script along with C. Robert Cargill, who’s better known to some as Massawyrm from Ain’t It Cool News.

The game is set in a future overrun by human augmentation—tahe ability to improve yourself with mechanical implants. It follows Adam Jensen, a security specialist who’s almost killed when the company he works for is attacked. He’s only saved by a great deal of augmentation to his body, and, once fully healed, he gets back to work. His first job back involves infiltrating and trying to stop a hostage situation, which turns out to be only the first step in uncovering a worldwide conspiracy.

Of the news, Derrickson had this to say:

“Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”

If it's not a complete turd I could see this being pretty cool. Hope they don't screw it up too much.

Community

I'm surprised there is no thread about this fantastic comedy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_(TV_series)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1439629/

It's a really clever, well-acted sitcom about seven community college students. It's relies heavily on meta-jokes and popular culture parodies taken to the extreme (for example, one episode takes place nearly entirely in an 8-bit era console game). It may not be as subtle as Arrested Development or as nihilistic as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but I'll be damned if it isn't equally smart and innovative.

Three seasons have aired (with consistency great quality, I actually think the third is the best so far), the fourth is coming in a couple of months.

To take a full-measure, I've created a spoiler thread to discuss Breaking Bad - the best television program to air on a cable network. Hell, to me it's just my favorite show--end of story.

So let's talk about how those beautiful sepia shots of ABQ and the amazing cooking montages. And how Todd murders a child in cold blood!

Do discuss to your heart's content. Talk about things like Walt killing Mike, Jesse's tear-soaked face as he blasts off Gale's charming befuddled whimpering face, and the great Heisenberg blowing Fring in half. No need for tags in here.
