Looking for a 120hz monitor

I like the look of the Samsung SyncMaster S27A950D, but I wonder if there's another out there that would give me more bang for my buck. My only requirements are

- limited to no ghosting
- minimal output delay (apparently most LCD monitors are in the 8-16ms range here?)
- 1080p or 1200p
- non-shit colour and contrast

How the monitor physically looks is not relevant in the slightest, I just want one with fast response and reasonable colour reproduction. Any help is hugely appreciated.

Best modem for Comcast?

So we'll be trying out Comcast cable internet and if we decide to keep it, it will be best to buy our own modem since they would otherwise rent theirs. Currently we have 1 computer connected via ethernet and up to 3 connected wirelessly (you can see how this can be a speed problem with our current 1Mbps DSL). Which cable modem would be best for the 50Mbps speed?

Just the idea of having objective markers show up around my room makes me want this. I could also imagine the augmented reality illusion being used when: combine overlords show up in HL3, the aoe bi*ches in KF, shouts in Skyrim. Ah man I could see this being used with style and not being implemented until certain points in the game to blow your mind. Like G-man suddenly walking out of your television.

This may not be Occulus but it is way more legit for people who have not-so-geeky friends, like me. IDK if anyone saw those supposedly leaked xbox 720 documents. It suggests holographic images being projected almost anywhere in your living room. I could see them adapting Illumiroom to use stereoscopic 3D and actually making this happen!

Anyone know how to transfer Windows 7 from SSD to SSD?

Hey all.

So yeah, I want to transfer my Windows 7 from my old (4 months) SSD to my new SSD arriving in a day or two.

The only proper advice I can really find is how to clone from HDD to SSD, and this requires USB to RAID cables etc etc. Pretty sure that doesn't apply here.

Reason being that a Crucial V4 256gb is...shit. Seriously. Donwloading something through Chrome causes Windows to "hang", yet still work, sometimes taking 10 minutes to wake up again.

Restarting my PC takes about 30 seconds, games load super quick, that's all gravy, but start up Windows and I have to leave it for a good 10 minutes, otherwise it hangs just opening a folder.

Random moments of extremely slow loading times on anything from games to images.

Looked around online and apparently this SSD is known for doing such things, as it's a cheap entry-level drive that isn't worth using.

So, time to bin it or store it for emergency backups.

Just bought a Samsung 840 Pro series. I was going to get an OCZ Vortex but apparently they're unreliable at the moment.

Going to fill in the secondary hard drive space at a later date.

Anyway.

My situation:

My laptop is a P170em chassis, so taking it apart and getting to bays and components takes seconds and is super easy.

I have a secondary HD bay for SSD drives.

I DON'T have the Windows CD but I do have the license key on a sticker underneath (receipt shows NO CD listed next to Windows 7, internal use only, so the retailer doesn't need to suplly me with the CD).

So my question is: How would I go about cloning/imaging Windows 7 from my current SSD to my new SSD and making the new SSD my new primary boot drive (secondary to be installed at a later date)?

Do I just plug in my new SSD with my laptop off, boot up, see it detected in Windows, then run an imaging software like Acronis?

Should I just buy an OEM version of Windows 7 for £70 instead of £140 and install fresh? This wouldn't really bother me as I have unlimited broadband to re-download my Steam and Origin games etc. Can I even do this? I read somewhere about people having to disconnect their graphics cards etc before running the OEM install on a fresh hard drive as it tries to install drivers without an OS or something, causing it to freeze or something like that.

Any advice is appreciated guys!

Krynn's medium-level diagnostics for common computer problems.

Krynn's medium-level diagnostics for common computer problems.

NOTE: This is a work in progress. I have only done the first two sections so far. I want people's opinions on whether or not this might be a helpful guide, if I should write things out differently, etc. I'm looking for critiques on presentation, and suggestions on other topics (I've got a list of things to talk about already, but if you think there should be something on here, let me know). And of course, if anybody happens to know a better way of doing things than I'm doing them, I would very much like to know it. And if I'm wrong about something, also let me know. Some of the more advanced things I only diagnose at work, and let more experienced techs do the actual fixing, so I may have some minor misunderstandings of what they do.

----------------------------------------------------------
I'm writing this guide because I am bored and secretly want to be one of those guys who makes internet guides. What follows is generally my initial tests and thoughts whenever I see people with a certain problem with their computer. It is not exhaustive. I've broken it down into basic categories to make it easier to jump to sections relevant to you. I deal with a lot more laptops than I do desktops, so a lot of this is written with laptops in the back of my mind, but I will try to point out key differences if I think of them. If any methods overlap I may refer you to another section of the guide.

Section 1: Display Problems

Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content)

 Show Spoiler
 Hide Spoiler

The most common display problems I see are:
A) No display at all, yet computer looks like its on (power light is on, fan is on, etc)
B) Discoloration or display artifacts
C) Display is very dim
D) Display cuts in and out or flickers when the LCD moves (on a laptop)

So lets go through these one at a time.

A) No display at all, yet computer looks like its on (power light is on, fan is on, etc)
There's two common causes for this sort of problem. The first, is a simple fix. Many times there is simply a static electric buildup in the motherboard or RAM. This simply needs to be discharged. To so so, simply unplug the computer from the wall, remove the battery (if its a laptop), and remove the RAM modules. Then hold down the power button on the computer for approximately 30 seconds. After that, reinsert the RAM modules, reconnect the battery and/or power cable and test it out. If it works, great! If not, then you've got bigger problems.

The second and most common cause is that the video chip overheated. What happens when the video chip overheats is basically the solder holding the chip onto the circuit board gets so hot that it loosens enough for the chip to actually separate from the board, or simply no longer has a sufficient connection to work. If you've ever had a “Red Ring of Death” on your xbox, then this is what happened to it. If this is the case then the most common fix is is a Reflow. Reflow Soldering essentially reheats the chip and solder again along with a “solder paste” and attempts to reseat and recreate the proper connection with the board. Some people like to do “makeshift reflows” using their oven, but unless you really don't care if you destroy the component entirely, just take it to a professional repair shop. This can be an expensive fix however, and it may be worth just buying a replacement video card, or even replacement laptop.

Sometimes that's not the problem either though. If that's the case, then most likely there is a failure with either the motherboard, or the video card/chip itself. At this point I'd say just double check your connections, and test with another video card if possible (laptop users... sorry but you're out of luck there, might be time to get a new computer or drop it off at a computer repair shop and expect a expensive quote).

B) Discoloration or display artifacts
This is usually due to a failing video chipset. Often there's not much to be done but to replace it, if possible. You can try to install the most current drivers for the video card (obtained from the manufacturer's website), and sometimes it just needs to be reflowed as per above.
C) Display is very dim
This is most commonly due to a bad lcd backlight. If you have another monitor to test with, see if that works any better. Most laptops also have a VGA or HDMI video output for you to test with. I usually see this problem with laptops, and almost always with older models. That is because they used to use CCFL backlights (essentially a florescent lamp) to light up the screen. These require a inverter as well, which can sometimes also be the problem. Both of these components can be replaced, but I'd recommend taking it to a professional as the backlight is difficult to do, but the inverter is not so bad. Its also possible to just replace the entire screen. Be aware though that CCFL backlit screens are essentially phased out at this point, and the cost of getting these parts can be surprisingly high. LED backlights are the standard today, and generally don't have this issue.

D) Display cuts in and out or flickers when the LCD moves (on a laptop)
This one usually the LCD cable. There is a cable that connects from the motherboard to the lcd and it runs through the hinge. Its designed to be flexible, but enough opening and closing can sometimes wear it out. Replacing this piece can sometimes be a pain as you need to open up the computer down to the motherboard, and then open up the LCD assembly as well.

I have also seen it where sometimes it an issue with the control board on the LCD itself. Basically sometimes where the cable plugs into the control board gets damaged. Usually the only way to determine (unless its visibly damaged) this is to replace the LCD cable and see if it works.

Section 2: Power on problems

Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content)

 Show Spoiler
 Hide Spoiler

This sections will be pretty short as there's only a few things to look for.

For desktops, usually when it doesn't power on simply means the power supply failed. This is an easy part to replace, just make sure you get a power supply that is the same wattage as the one you had, and replace it.

For laptops, often its just the AC adapter (charger) has failed. If you have another one, with the same voltage and amperage, you can try that one. You can also try removing the battery, and try turning it on with the battery out of the unit and run off the AC adapter. Sometimes the battery causes a short circuit and just taking it out makes it work again. It can also be an issue with the DC jack on the laptop. This is the port you plug the AC adapter into. Take a small screw driver or something like that and see if you can push the dc jack around. Don't push too hard, just enough to see if it wiggles around. If it does, then its likely that the dc jack needs to be replaced or re-soldered back onto the control board.

For desktops or laptops, another issue that could cause power-on problems is a short circuit. This can happen in many spots, so its usually hard to pin down. A lot of times its the USB ports, where some of the metal leads in the port are bent out of place and touch another bit of metal it shouldn't be touching. You can replace the usb ports, or simply disconnect them if this is the problem. You can also try just unbending the metal pieces, but you still probably won't be able to use the port and I'd rather be safe and disconnect it entirely to prevent it from happening again.

Be aware, shorts can often damage other things as well. You may find that if you find and fix the short, and get the unit to power one, some other things may not work, and may never work. Shorts are bad like that.

Also its worth noting, that the majority of the time I see game consoles not powering on, its either because the power cables are bad, or the USB ports are bad. Rarely do I find it to be something else.

BSOD shenanigans...

God damn pissed off!

Two nights ago
Switching off for the night, got a completely random BSOD. Decided to deal with it the next day.

Yesterday morning
the wife was on the computer for about 2 hours without problems. I switched over to my account and.... BSOD! ****. Went on to google to research the possible reasons using the crash report. Got about 20 mins the.... BSOD. **** ****! It rebooted and from that point on Chrome refused to work. Ok, getting a little irritated...

Hopped to Firefox, sat for another 10 mins and hahahaBSOD!! ************!! Quit all browsers, disabled all non-essential progs and ran my AV. All clear. Ran anti malware, all clear but, hey, how about another BSOD. FUUUU.... Ok, you get the idea....

Throughout the day, running various things to try and work out where the error was, I must have had about 12 BSOD before I gave up and went back to bed.

This morning
BSOD within 5 minutes of booting up. Instantly followed by a 'Your Windows is not genuine' message.

Now, I know that a good portion of BSOD crashes are RAM related. And from the seemingly random crashes I've had, that would back it up. But my RAM is only 2 months old, and has been working perfectly since installed.

Since I have no money to get more, I decided to do a long needed reinstall on a clean drive instead. I've spent the best part of the day doing this (its now 8pm) and so far, it seems to be running fairly stable. Could it have just been ages of clogged drivers and installations? Nothing, other than Dead Island, had been installed on my rig for a few weeks. Apart from a chrome and adobe flash update.

Flash causes Firefox to crash on specific Youtube pages

[copy-pasted from Reddit]

Flash version: 11.5.502.135
Firefox version: 17.0.1
Windows version: Win7 64-bit w/ latest updates

I recently reinstalled both of these in an attempt to solve the lockup. I used Adobe's Flash Uninstaller program along with manually deleting all Adobe, Flash, and Macromed folders in c:\windows\system32, \program files (x86), and \%APPDATA%, plus a system restart for good measure.

Middle of the road PC build

Any advice on a decent middle of the road PC build?

I did post a thread a few months back - still not bought the bits... babies are expensive

I'm after something that will serve me well for the next couple of years, but without costing a fortune.

So I'm thinking of maybe a nVidia 660 etc.

If people can suggest some reasonably priced decent bits that will serve me well for a while I might start buying them today!

Steambox Upgrade Help/Suggestion

Hey, so I have an HTPC that I would like to upgrade into a mid-level gaming/steam box. The problem.. my MOBO (Intel DG45FC) is integrated video with no PCI-E slot capable of a gaming videocard. I need suggestions on a new MOBO and case...

I want it to be compatible with my old parts, so I can just throw them in my new system with a videocard, so I can actually game on the thing.

- E8400 CPU
- 4GB Ram (sorry don't know the exact type)
- 250GB SATA Drive

Would like a smaller case (as it will be in my tv stand)... with good ventilation. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Video Card.... Need New.... D:

So my GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr by MSI is annoying the hell out of me. The fans don't work half the time, and I'm just sick of dealing with this. It's a decent card, but I've hard a lot of issues with it. I'm going to buy a new card and then get this warrantied and then sell it.

Right now, I don't know how much money to spend. I don't game as much as I used to, and I'm not really worried about MAXING out everything. If I can max out random games at 1080p that would be great. This card can handle that extremely well.

Essentially, I need something in the $200 range or so depending on how much performance improvement I get....

Someone recommend me something, please!

EDIT: I just checked and prices are still $200 for this freaking card. Really? :l

Ugh....

EDIT #2:
I have decided I can afford at least $300-325 if I sell this card. What can I get in that range?

Strange stuttering problem

I'm so sorry to keep making threads, but I can't find any help on the internet.

When I first put the comp together, I played Crysis and GTA4 to test it out. The first day I played them they ran perfectly smooth at max settings, no issues. Then the next day I tried playing them and I had this strange issue. Every 2-3 seconds, I get a subtle yet annoying slowdown/choppiness/stutter. It smooths out, then 2-3 seconds later does it again.

Figuring I screwed something up, I formatted and reinstalled fresh. I installed Black Ops 2 yesterday, played it perfectly fine with no issues. Today I go in, bam, the same issue as before. A small stuttering/slowdown every few seconds.

It gets weirder. The only game that is NOT affected by this problem is CS:GO. For some reason it never has the issue.

What the hell could it be? Fault GPU? Bad software? Wrong settings?

once again my pc is screwing up whit me in weird ways

this time it that my pc seem to turn on but my monitor dont seen to show anything,or more specifically it show stuff very dim, because when I can see something being displayed but very dark almost unnoticeable

when the monitor is turned on while the cpu is off a white rectangle appears saying "no conection detected blabla" something like that, that small rectangle seem to appear when this problem happens

I press the on button of the pc to reset it and them it resets fine into the "window wasnt closed apropiatly" screen so that means the pc booted up fine, normaly the monitor reacted at just one reset but today I had to reset twice,do this resseting can damage the pc?

also all my pc plugs are connected to the same cable extension wich have a red buttom to turn on-off the current, this buttom emits a light when on so I was turning it off to sleep lately, and the monitor problem started,so I guess that might be related

I read in google that this problems might due to the power stuff of the pc,well those where more logical than checking if the cables are plugged, but the way to test the power supply thing looks too complicated for me

- I want to futureproof my system, and keep it quiet and cool
- hyperthreading could come in useful for streaming or something
- RAM is cheap these days
- SSDs are awesome
- pixels are also awesome
- I'm a dirty audiophile
- I want a mechanical keyboard and Cherry Red switches sound like the best
- some people said the 3.5G Deathadder had the best type of optical sensor for gaming

Hey again!

So I didn't want to make a separate thread for each of these random questions so if anyone has answers, to any of them, feel free to chime in.

1. I purchased Windows 7 OEM 64bit. If I reformat my computer, will I be able to reinstall windows? Or because it's OEM will I have to buy another disk? I really am trying to avoid having to "upgrade" to windows 8.

2. Since being on my new rig with 64 bit windows, I tried installing Far Cry 2 to tide me over til Far Cry 3. Having a GTX680, I went into settings and cranked everything up to max. When I chose the option to go from DX 9 to DX 10 it told me I had to restart the game for changes to take effect. No problem! I exit and go to restart. The Far Cry 2 "splash screen" or whatever you call it comes up, screen goes blank for less than a second as if it were loading into the game, and then nothing. Back to desktop. Ive tried running in windows 7 compatibilty mode. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing. Goes from splash screen to nothing. Any ideas?

3. I have PC12800 1866mhz ram. My computer is only recognizing it as 1600. How can I change it to run at its full potential? My motherboard supports it.

4. Is anyone hungry? I'm starving...

cant transfer certain files from external hdd to my pc

my problem is that I choose a folder inside my external hdd and when I move it to my pc desktop nothing happens
not even trying the "copy" on the folder and "paste" on the desktop work either

but sometimes when I move folders or files inside the folder it does transfer the files but sometimes some folders dont, and when I open those folder who dont copy and move the files inside the files do move, but its too dam tiresome to move things like that
and I hope thats the reason and is not something that will happen whit any pc cuz otherwise the external hdd kind of lost is supposed purpose them

I think the fact that the mentioned folder was transfered from a windows7 pc to my external hdd may be the reason, cuz only that single folder seem to be the one who doesnt move as far I have noted, the rest moves normaly
my pc is vista

so I dont know if maybe thats related,I really hate when pc got this weird dam errors

Thoughts on Microsoft Surface?

So this is nearly out. There's no hope in hell I can afford one but I do think that the Surface Pro looks pretty interesting. Here's a breakdown on the difference between the Pro and non-Pro versions. Basically the Pro version comes with a pen and has a full version of Windows 8 that can run Metro and Windows 7 programs, while the non-Pro one only runs Metro and Windows Store programs. Both versions have a built in stand and a cover (silicone?) that doubles as a keyboard. It only has 1 USB port and a micro SD instead of full SD port though. I'm never going to be an early adaptor for this kind of stuff but I could see myself getting a Windows 8 tablet down the line.

pc didnt boot despite turning on,them magically booted

last night when I turned on the pc it didnt booted despite the fan and everything else seemed to work, but it made a loud noise but tnothing was shown on the screen, after many tryes I gave up and went to sleep, today at morning I tryed the same and the same was still happening,I was trying to boot it whit no mouse of keyboard cuz I was told that may help but nothing, but suddenly for no reason it did worked today at the second try
but got no mouse or keyboard so I reseted manually
them when I reseted it but whit mouse and keyboard plugged it bluecrashed
restarted in safe mode and worked fine,no bluecrash and the keyboard and mouse was plugged
so I used system restore to restore to a previous point and is working fine now

so any idea what would have caused this?

the same day this happened I moved the pc to the house of a friend so I thought the pc may have damaged or something

in the restore points things the most recent one showed a java update,I do remenber updating java cuz I read that it was risky to update it untill the latest update which was seemed safe which was java 7 version 9 or something, maybe that caused it?

also I think this happened some days ago once but not sure it was the same

blue screen where normal thing but much less since I reformated the pc some months ago

so any idea?

New PC Advice

Well, holy shit. I'm finally buying a new PC!

\o/

And I need the help of you, ValveHelpLifeTime.net!

Some of you may know I work in IT, and back when I last built a PC I worked quite closely with PC hardware. Now I'm a little bit out of touch as I'm working with servers and networking all day.

My aim is as follows:

To build a decent spec mid-size ATX tower PC. Not top of the range, sort of mid-level. Approximate budget, around £300-400 GBP so not a lot of money to play with. I know this can be done.

I have some questions:

Intel or AMD? My personal preference was always Intel.

AMD or nVidia? Quite ambivalent.

Should I shop around multiple (UK) retailers or stick to one such as eBuyer? Any other recommendations?

I'm keen on getting a mobo that supports UEFI

I quite like the look of this motherboard: http://www.ebuyer.com/351595-gigaby...displayport-8-channel-audio-ga-z77x-ud3h-wifi

Recommendations on SSDs? Do I just get an SSD for booting and a traditional HD for general storage? Or should I spend some extra cash and go all out SSD?

Core i5 or i7? Probably i5 for my budget.

Any other advice gratefully received.

Not a "will my rig run max settings" thread. Still need help though!

This thread is sort of piggy-backing off of bobtheskulls thread, where I built a rig a suggested it to him. However, as I'm in the process of building one myself, I started modifying my suggestions. This isn't a "will my new rig run BF3 at max settings" thread. Just a few simple questions for some of you more knowledged tech guys. So first, here's the setup:

i7-3770 (non-k, I don't plan on overclocking)
8GB PC1833
GTX680 2GB
Samsung 256 SSD

So here's my questions that the internet can't seem to answer:

1. Do I really need to be that worried about the "ivy bridge heat issue" or is that exclusive to people who push their CPU's to 5.0ghz? This is single-handedly a reason that keeps making me think to just get a i7-2700 instead. But I also hear the heat "threshold" for ivy is a lot higher. Either way, do I worry?

2. Ok I lied, will this set up without overclock be able to play todays games? Not necesarily maxed out, but decently enough?

3. Do I need more RAM, or is 8gb enough? Do I need faster RAM instead? PC2XX?

4. Does anyone miss me on this forum?

Thanks in advance guys!

EDIT - For the record, I'm coming up from this rig that I built 6 years ago:

AMD FX-57 Single core processor
ATI x1900
1GB ram

Spilled candle wax on an ultrabook keyboard. Advice?

So my girlfriend just rang, and she's accidentally spilled candle wax on the keyboard of her Asus Ultrabook. She turned it off right away and hasn't yet turned it back on.
I advised her to get a pin and slowly ease off the wax, which she did, but she's concerned that it's gone under the keys and has damaged the computer.

First of all, can someone tell me how bad this might be? Could it have ruined the internal workings of the laptop? (I know it's all hypothetical here, I apologise, we're in two different places and I haven't seen it yet.) I would presume to think that the wax couldn't get beneath the keys, but I just don't know (hence why I'm asking you guys.)

And also, any advice for getting it out? If it were my keyboard I know I could just pop each key out and fish around to get the wax out, but it seems (I don't know for sure though) that those keys don't come off. Does anyone know what the deal is there?

Thanks heaps,

Building a new Rig - Advice please?

It is coming closer to that time where I have to say goodbye to an old friend who has been of fantastic service for 5 years. The problems have been increasing to the point that games are now unplayable. In 2 or 3 months I'll be in a position where I can build a new rig. Only trouble is, I've not really been keeping up with the market.

I've always been a firm supporter of AMD processors and nVidia cards. Now, however, most of my friends have done the unthinkable and switched to Intel. Even though nVidia has always been my first choice, I have become increasingly aware of several games on my account having 'problems with nVidia drivers' and either not being playable or being severely glitchy. (I can't recall which ones offhand.)

So... my question is, what would you guys suggest? Intel or AMD? nVidia? What models would you suggest? I'm not going to have a massive budget, but I'll be able to get something pretty decent.

Computer restarts whilst loading Windows 7 during boot

My dad has a computer that became inoperable last week. Although I'm firmly on the fence he has a feeling that its due to my Auntie when she was going through her emails when she was a staying for a week, and may have opened up an attachment that she shouldn't of.

Now whenever you boot up windows it goes through the boot up screens and then goes to the Windows 7 loading screen, 1-2 seconds later the computer reboots itself so you have a infinate loop of rebooting with the same process. The following is a process of what I have done:
-Advanced boot up mode; gone through Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration and Enable Low-Resolution video (640x480)

-Repair Windows Installation; Attempted both from the official Windows 7 (x64) Disc, and a System Repair Disc I created from my own computer and tried it on his. The Repair process does not detect any problems with the Windows Installation, so does not conintue the process, but the computer continues to loop.
-Perform a system restore; the same problem occurs

-Gone through a memory diagnosis; detects a problem with memory, although it never mentions where the problem occurs.

-Swapped around memory, changed out sticks; Initially my dad had two sticks of DDR3-1333 2GB, which I then proceeded to take one out and tested one in all slots, then I did the same thing with the other. After that failed I went to use my own Corsair DDR3-1333 4GB and the same thing happens, and my Ram worked too when I put it back in my Rig, so I will not put this problem down to corrupt Ram, albeit it may be a problem with the mainboard.

I'm currently in the process of doing two other things that may solve the problem, but I'm not sure.
-Delete video drivers; The problem thats occuring at the moment seems to emulate a problem that I have had on three seperate occasions, twice with Vista and once before with Win7, whereby when I'm installing the latest graphics drivers, either through an interuption during the process or a corrupt download would cause the installation to be corrupt, and I had the same problem as my dad is having now.

When my 9800GTX became unusable I upgraded to a GTX470, but because I had the wrong drivers installed for that particular card, the problem again occured. So I'm wondering if deleting the video drivers will prompt the graphics card to work from its default setting. Then its just a case of downloading the latest signed drivers. Just to note I have never done a memery diagnosis when I had graphical issues, I have just reformatted the computer.

-Restore factory settings; failing the above I am already backing up my Dads HDD to a portable 750GB HDD before I attempt to reinsert the Drive to my Dads computer. If the above doesn't prompt the device to work I'm going to restore the computer to factory settings and hoping for the best.

Unless anyone else has a better idea, I'll continue to do this.

Valve & Intel Work On Open-Source GPU Drivers

Here's the news.

Michael Larabel
As the latest Valve Linux news for today, Valve Software actually cares about open-source Linux graphics drivers. Last week they had the Intel OTC Linux graphics team out to Bellevue to jointly work on the OpenGL renderer for the Source Engine and the Intel Mesa driver.

Ian Romanick of Intel's Open-Source Technology Center blogged about The zombies cometh.... In there, Romanick shares that he and his team were in Bellevue working with Valve's Linux team on Left 4 Dead 2. Romanick's key points from the blog post:

- "It was the most successful work trip I've ever had. The guys at Valve were amazing to work with."

- Goals included "help them tune their game for our driver / hardware", find where the performance is lacking, and discover what OpenGL features they want/need.

- Some OpenGL Source Engine optimizations were found when it came to buffer vertex management and where some shader recompilation was triggered for all drivers/hardware.

- Intel Mesa developers found where their driver really needs to be sped up.

- Intel Linux engineers have access to the Left 4 Dead 2 source-code from Valve to help them in their optimization efforts.

- Patches to improve the Intel Mesa DRI driver for Left 4 Dead 2 have begun to land.

- "The funny thing is Valve guys say the same thing about drivers. There were a couple times where we felt like they were trying to convince us that open source drivers are a good idea. We had to remind them that they were preaching to the choir. Their problem with closed drivers (on all platforms) is that it's such a blackbox that they have to play guess-and-check games. There's no way for them to know how changing a particular setting will affect the performance. If performance gets worse, they have no way to know why. If they can see where time is going in the driver, they can make much more educated guesses."

- Valve has requested improvements to the GL_ARB_debug_output extension implementation for Mesa.

- They're working on a "smart vsync" implementation to get best performance while trying to avoid tearing.

That's about it for that was mentioned in the email.

It was back in May that Ian Romanick, Eric Anholt, and Kenneth Graunke approached me about getting in contact with Valve. The Intel Linux developers were interested with what was going on in the Linux gaming world, but the official Intel channels for getting in contact with Valve were too slow/uneventful. I got the Intel-Valve-Linux ball rolling and now for the liasoning I'm told I'll be be rewarded with a beer in Nuremberg at XDS2012 in September. Prost!

[Note to the Intel guys: Preferrably Gutmann as a nice beer from the area, otherwise most other beer from the region is good, sans Tucher.]
Source: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE0MzQ

Custom Installing Windows to C partition?

Okay, so I got another big bug of some sort, some sort of malware/keylogger. I had been thinking about switching from Vista to Win 7 soon anyways. So I got my important files on my flash drive, took them to another computer and scanned the shit out of it with SuperAntiSpyware, SpyBot, and Malwarebytes. Nothing came up.

Last time I did a clean install of windows over a year ago, I did it to my C drive.... So I did that again, but this time I did it with Windows 7. And I even went ahead and deleted Windows Old folder.

Now, I've done a bunch of scans on my newly installed windows with several programs, with zero detections. But I noticed that there is still stuff from my old C drive. Not a lot, but odds and ends, a lot of game folders, and a few photo albums...
Since I know nothing about computers, I don't understand why this stuff isn't gone? Windows had warned me that once I did a custom install on C it would remove all those files. Also my Windows Old seem to still exist.

I just don't want any risk of this Malware coming back, so I don't understand why these files still exist on my C drive and I want them gone.
