PA stands for Planetary Annihilation, basically the love child of Total Annihilation and Supcom, it will bring RTS on inter-planetary scale, whereby an asteroid itself becomes a WMD. The game will be developed with enough funding. The kickstarter has only been going for about 1-2 hours, and its already at $9,000

Games for busy people?

I've been done with school for a year, and I've come to that point in my life where I work a lot, need to practice design, research tutorials for my job, have a girlfriend I see everyday, and have a larger social life in a bigger city.
I don't have time for most games, I usually install a game, try to play for a bit, but then become super overwhelmed and uninstall it. A pretty massive change from last year, so I realize jumping into games like "Skyrim" simply isn't possible anymore.

I'm looking for games that are good for busy people, but NOT for casual people. IE: I want games I can pop in and out of, but are not peggle.

TLRD;
I really like games with a sense of progression and challenge, but not crazy addicting. Something I can pick up for 30 minutes between obligations.
Here are some I am thinking of maybe?-
Dota 2
Guild Wars 2

The Last of Us- New game by Naughty Dog

I just started playing the Last of Us. The new game by the creators of Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted. I really loved the uncharted series and this game follows in the same tradition of quality that the 3 uncharted titles brought to PS3. So far the production values, voice-acting and story has been top-notch. I especially love the music of the game; it sort of has a twangy southern guitar soundtrack that reminds me of something out of "No Country for Old Men." The game has a lot of similarities to the books "The Road" and "No Country for old men", which both examine human nature and how human cruelty for survival knows no bounds. Both are excellent books by Cormac Mccarthy, so something in video game form in the same vein is phenomenal. I was just wondering if anyone is playing it here on the forums or was thinking of picking it up. I am open for any discussions. I am about 3 hours in game so I probably won't get too deep in the discussion until I complete it. Currently, I am playing it on hard and having a great challenge.

Has anybody been to a Gamestop midnight release?

So The Last of Us comes out tonight, and I have a pre-order at a Gamestop a couple towns over for it. Thing is, when I pre-ordered I thought it was going to be releasing on a Tuesday, like normal games do, and that I could just pick it up on my lunch break or after I get out of work, since I work not 5 mins from the place. But I found out that... nope, its releasing on a Friday (tomorrow). So instead of being able to just pick it up on my way home from work, I'm going to have to specifically drive out there on my day off to get it.

However, as it turns out, I'm going to be in town hanging out with a friend tonight in that area. Gamestop is having a midnight release for it, and I'm going to be out there around that time anyways so I am now considering going to the midnight release. But I've never gone to one, so I'm not sure how it works. I also haven't pre-ordered a game through a retail shop in probably almost a decade. So a few questions for you experienced nerds.

1) I got a text yesterday saying "GameStop:Your The Last of Us avail 12:01AM Fri, Arrive 10pm Thu to finalize payment, 30% bonus on trades."

Dafuq does this mean? I have to get there 2 hours early to pay the rest of the bill in order to get it at midnight? I asked them if I could pay the whole thing down when I pre-ordered and they said they only like to take the $5 reserve. I sure as shit don't want to hang out there in that tiny ass store for two hours with shitloads of "gamestop customers" smelling up the place eugh.

2) Does this mean they simply will not be closing overnight? Like, if my friend doesn't want to go, and I just head over there at 1 or 2am when I leave his place, will it still be open and I can grab the game then?

3) How social are these events? Will I have to talk to these people? Are any of them going to be normal?

Thanks in advance.

The Witcher 3: The WIld Hunt

Ok so the Witcher is probably one of my favorite RPG-style games of this generation. The first one to me was an instant classic and the second one, while much more linear and not nearly as open world, still told a great story and was incredibly fun to play. The trailer below basically has me salivating and I literally cannot wait for this to hit PC. Looks like I'll have to buy a new video card though, doesn't look like even a GTX680 will hold up with these visuals. Looks like theyre going back to their open world element from the first one while improving upon all the great additions of the second. Should easily be my GOTY 2014.
Actual gameplay (sorry I couldnt embed from this shit computer at work):

E3 2013 Games Thread

So while there is likely going to be a large focus on the new consoles coming out this year (and we have threads to discuss those), I'm more interested in the games that are going to be announced or shown at E3 this year.

What are you all excited about? Personally I can't wait to see more of Watch Dogs, will be interesting to see how open and freeform it all actually is. The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, Rome II, and X Rebirth are other games I plan to be watching very closely as well.
this is funny to me because a year ago, i was going to 7-11, buying $25 visa gift cards, then putting money on new accounts to buy more item farming accounts for TF2.

and now i can just buy steam cards and do the same thing. i can buy 1 key on 1 account then buy 4-5 premium gifts with a steam card and VIOLA!

Seriously? What an awful name! I understand that the idea is that it's supposed to be a complete entertainment center, hence the concept of "oneness", but it's going to cause some confusion.
The Genius Behind Valve and their actions

In the next few lines i will describe why i am a die-hard fan of Valve, and why do i think they really are the smartest of the bunch in terms of approaching their costumers, and mr.Gabes talks about value to customers paying off,in practice.

First off,i would like to say the following numbers are an estimate, and should be taken with a bit of a reserve, but i think i will be hitting the mark pretty close.

This thread is about the International 3,and how valve have effectively done a self-sustained tournament with the largest prize pool that i know of.

As of this moment, the prize pool about dota2 has grown with the help of compendiums to 2,3 mill $.
Now,valve is giving the starting 1,6 mill $ out of its own pocket,as it was with the International 1 and 2.

So,compendiums have generated an extra 700k $ in the prize pool, which is pretty neat, and considering that the international is in august, they will generate more(my prediction goes to around 2,7 mill made, but we will see).

So,valve lets you boost the international by 2,5$ for each compendium, and you get some cool stuff out of it, plus the more the merrier, since for each goal passed you get something extra.(info here, the thread isn't about how compendiums work).

Here is where things get interesting. Compendiums cost 10$ each (8 euros here, but euro to dollar ratio is 1,3 dollars=1 euro,so 8 euros are roughly 10$), and you deposit 2,5 dollars in the international. That leaves valve with 7,5$ of your purchase. And since 7,5/2,5 =3, they are basically making 3 times more than the deposit from compendiums.

So,700k times 3 is 2,1mill. They made 2,1mill profit because we donated 700k in the international.
Now, subtract the starting 1,6mill from 2,1mill,and you get 500k $ left.
I believe that the remaining 500k will be spent on stuff like hotels, paying the staff, the hall they will be using, and the programmers and designers back at valve that will be making the compendium exclusive items and such. They should brake even and have 0 on their balance now.

From here on out, every 100k $ is 300k $ in valves pocket as PURE PROFIT,it will not be used on the international, they will be able to do anything they please with it since they just funded the whole international with customer money.

And noone will mind, since you get a lot for 10$,albeit virtual goods, they are still goods.

No one will be able to touch them, noone has figured this out before, and i don't believe that someone will in the near future. They will do every international in this fashion from now on, and be sure that it will only help them grow DOTA 2 more and more as an e-sport,since the prize pool can't be found in any other e-sport game.

All in all,Cheers valve, for the sheer brilliance with this move,we love you, give us HL3 etc etc.

P.S. i have bought a compendium a long time ago,and if you play dota, my advice is to get it, and you will get a lot of stuff for just 10$.

Ouya games console (Kickstarter)

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

We get it – smartphones and tablets are getting all the new titles – they're "what's hot.” The console market is pushing developers away. We’ve seen a brain drain: some of the best, most creative gamemakers are focused on mobile and social games because those platforms are more developer-friendly. And the ones who remain focused on console games can’t be as creative as they’d like.

Let’s open this sucker up! It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let’s make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper!

We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free. We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe.
I like the idea, but I think everyday people are too stupid to embrace this. If you look at the list of games people want (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ouyatop20), they're all still clicking on the shitty commercial games like CoD, Battlefield and Assassin's Creed, etc. A lot of indie games are close/ahead, but still...

People are dumb, and they'll continue to be dumb. They'll complain about the graphics. They'll complain about the RAM/CPU. They'll continue to want the worst and most commercial games. They just don't get it.

ARMA 3

Its about time we actually make a thread specifically for this game, and today's news makes a good starting post. Vegeta already posted a link in the other thread, but didn't provide much info on what he was linking to (presumably because his pants needed changing).

Starting on March 5 you will be able to Pre-Order the game. All Pre-Orders come with access to the Alpha. The Arma 3 Alpha runs from 5 March 2013 until the Beta becomes available (expected in Q2 2013).

So yeah, buy it. Its got several versions. I personally will be buying the Supporter edition because Bohemia is probably one of the highest caliber game developers around and I want them to stay around.

There is a page dedicated to information on the Alpha as it progresses here.

And here is the required specs for your computer to run it. Its a beast of a game and requires a beast of a computer so make sure you check this.
http://www.arma3.com/buy#requirements

“We want to keep everything that was great about the first game and that our fans loved,” Beynon explained. “We’re not going to westernize it or dumb it down. The design philosophy isn’t turn everything up to 11. We want to maintain and preserve that unique soul and spirit, that Eastern European perspective. We want this to appeal to the more cerebral gamer. We want it to be a more slow paced affair, and we’re going to preserve those moments of horror and exploration and the gameplay mechanics that reward the more investigative player.”

In case you haven't heard of the game series (only 2 so far), it's pretty awesome. It tells a dark, gritty story and the gameplay is pretty fun too. I bought the game on Steam quite a while back but I decided to get this because of the new extras. Pay what you want for the games, and a whole crapton of extras not released before including:

Early Alan Wake Demos (torrent) 246 MB
Harry Garrett Show (torrent) 136 MB
Making of Videos (torrent) 2.6 GB
Writer in the Cabin clips (torrent) 318 MB
Night Springs Episodes (torrent) 4.0 GB
Balance Slays the Demon Music Video (torrent) 141 MB
Alan Wake "The Movie" (full playthrough of the game) (multiple GBs)
The Library of concept art and production photos 44.0 MB
Alan Wake Score Sheet Music 46.8 MB
Alan Wake Screenplays 1.03 MB
Alan Wake Visual Identity Guidelines 1.86 MB
The Alan Wake Files Book 5.2 MB
Alan Wake Wallpapers 50.8 MB
Cardboard Cutouts 12.7 MB
Night Springs Comic Book 128 MB
Psycho Thriller Comic Book 94.2 MB
This is a message from them to us about a possible sequel and where the developer, Remedy, is at right now:

Basically Nintendo partnered with Youtube and now videos with a certain amount/length of content matched to Nintendo's samples that they've provided to Youtube have had ads put on them with the money going to Nintendo or if the uploader was already monetizing them the money is now going to Nintendo instead of them.

To be honest I'm surprised it's taken this long for a major company to do something like this. Let's Plays are pretty blatant copyright infringement (whether it has any positive or negative effect on sales or anything else) and large companies tend to be fairly conservative about that sort of thing and edge on the side of caution.

What's that phrase for how Valve maps show you where to go next?

What's that phrase Valve designers use for the way a map or level subtly guides you to where you need to go next? Using lighting and features to draw your eye automatically. Something like "hidden hand" or "unseen guide"??? I read about it somewhere, but <search_engine> can't seem to find it for me.

Pirates Play Game Development Simulator - Go Bankrupt Due To Piracy

Guys, I want to know what you think of ---> THIS

When we released our very first game, Game Dev Tycoon (for Mac, Windows and Linux) yesterday, we did something unusual and as far as I know unique. We released a cracked version of the game ourselves, minutes after opening our Store.

The cracked version is nearly identical to the real thing except for one detail… Initially we thought about telling them their copy is an illegal copy, but instead we didn’t want to pass up the unique opportunity of holding a mirror in front of them and showing them what piracy can do to game developers. So, as players spend a few hours playing and growing their own game dev company, they will start to see the following message, styled like any other in-game message:

"Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don’t buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt."

Slowly their in-game funds dwindle, and new games they create have a high chance to be pirated until their virtual game development company goes bankrupt.
Actually considering playing the demo now and if I like it, buying it. $7.99 or £5.15 of my English Gold is pretty much nothing.

Gonna check it out. Cool marketing strategy. Also, looks like a nice little game.

Day Z: a realistic open-world zombie mod for Arma 2 with PvP and persistent death

So as far as I can tell, Day Z is pretty much the game that we've all been waiting for our entire lives.

It's a mod for Arma 2: OA (or Combined Ops) and is in alpha, just having been released a few weeks ago ago... but it's exploded in popularity over the past weekend and for good reason it seems. The official site is http://www.dayzmod.com/ but it's down at the moment, presumably due to server overload.

The server is an open world environment in a post-Soviet state, with an area of 225km (15km on each side). You spawn with a pistol and a handful of supplies, and your only goal is to survive by scavenging for gear. You require food and water to survive so you can't just hide somewhere, you have to keep moving to replenish your supplies or you will die. You are free to kill other players so be careful - many players roam in packs of bandits killing other survivors for their supplies. On top of that, there are fast zombies wandering around everywhere (especially in towns) which are drawn by noise.

When you die, you are DEAD. You lose all your items and weapons and have to start over from scratch. New players spawn in the coastal area which is also prowled by bandits looking for easy kills. However if you log out without dying you will start in the same spot with the same supplies you had when you left, even if you join a different server (there are something like 10 servers, each a 64 player instance of the same huge map). The only thing that rolls over after death is your "humanity" score which is basically karma based on whether or not you are killing other players.

I'm downloading it right now... looks incredible. For anyone looking for a more in depth idea of what the gameplay is like, check out this two-part RPS article about it (the second part is more interesting, so if you are pressed for time skip the first half):

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/10/thank-you-for-the-dayz-part-zero/

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/14/surviving-in-day-z-part-two/

There is also a great Something Awful thread about Day Z which has mirrors for the download files as well as installation instructions for both Steam and non-Steam copies of Arma 2:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3481582

Needless to say, we need to get some HL2.ne--er, ValveTime.netters together and play. Take the fight to the bandits!

edit: The mod's site is back up. The direct link to their file server is http://cdn.armafiles.info/ - to install just download all the rar's from that directory and extract them all to your Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead/addons/@dayz folder (you will have to create it - your Arma 2 folder is in steamapps/common if you have the Steam version) and put -nosplash -mod=@dayz in launch options or shortcut.
